Oh dear. My workbench thread has slipped all the way down to the oblivion of page 3. And I haven even been idle...

I have been trying my hand at making some trees. And I am willing to go so far as to say that my experiments have been a smashing succes.

Very nice - what was the process for those at home playing catch up (have been away for only three weeks!)?

I bought a few of GW's new contrast paints to try out.

I basecoated 3 minis. From left to right White gesso, Skull White spray primer and Grey seer spray primer. (the official contrast colour primer. Then they got a layer of Guilliman flesh.

Then Ultramarines Blue. And then I finished the whole thing of with some bases and regular metal paint for the metal bits.


All in all I am quite happy with the results. These three guys took under an hour from start to finish. The one based with the white Gesso is a bit more rough that the other two. So I think a spray primer will give the best results.

WOW. That is very impressive. I think the one with white primer looks best. When using these different washes for speed painting it's my experience that the miniatures often look a bit brownish/dirty/blurry. The white primer gives the cleanest finish which I think will look best when you have lots of miniatures together in a unit or an army. Unless you are building a beastmen army of course.

So after years and years of gathering up courage to make a flexible terrain mat I finally did it. My partner in crime Erik and I finally decided to just jump in and do it.

I started out with making my own flock in various shades.


Then a sheet was laid out in Eriks basement. We mixed two paint samples some sand and 6 (I think) tubes of acrylic caulk in a bucket smeared it out over the sheet and dropped the various shades of flock on it ending up with this.


I am very happy with our result. We were aiming at a sort of southern Italy/Greece kind of look. Now we are just waiting for it to dry completely so we can shake of the excess flock and see the final result.

All in all it took waaay shorter than I had imagined and was waaaay less messy than I had feared.

Here is a pic of the finished mat. With some miniatures and some terrain. This experiment is officially a smashing succes. I cannot believe I have spent years faffing about gathering up the courage to make one of these mats. I am definitely making more for different climates. Only thing left is to trim it round the edges.

My old GeoHex mat is VERY long in the tooth- what was the basic sheet you started with? Bedsheets? Drop cloth?

It is made on a bedsheet.

Edges are trimmed and everything is ready to go. We might need some terrain adjustments for your splendid new temple.
