I painted my first Primaris Space Marine!  He’s Nemesis Chapter – an Ultramarines successor chapter with origins in the dark days of the Horus Heresy.

Sergeant Glaucon, 2nd Battle Company, 3rd Squad, Nemesis Chapter.  His banner reads ΝΕΜΕΣΙΣ – “nemesis” in Greek capitals.

This Intercessor Sergeant, from Games Workshop’s Dark Imperium starter set, is largely indistinguishable from the squad he leads.  Traditionally, Space Marine sergeants have a different weapon configuration (something Napoleonic like pistol and swords), bare heads and big banners to mark them out.  I originally finished painting the mini, but was uneasy with how he looked alongside the rest of the squad.  Only thing to distinguish him was the helmet being red.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will also spot the checks added to his right pauldron since this photo was taken.

So I added a dirty great banner.  This one is from the Space Marine Ironclad Dreadnought, which matches the swollen proportions of the 2017 Space Marine iteration.  Here’s Glaucon next to some classic Space Marines with flags to show the scale creep over the last 30 years.

Left to right: 1987 Blood Angel; 2013 Ultramarine; 2017 Nemesis Marine.

Yeah yeah, I know you’re gonna say “Marines got swole cos of Guilliman’s super-seed”, but I reject your fluff-lead view of Games Workshop’s miniatures and state flatly that Primaris is the new de facto Space Marine and is directly comparable to the other two Marines above.  Nurrr.

Glaucon leading his little brothers from Ultramarines Squad Varenus.

The Dark Imperium box is overwhelming with the amount of Marines in it, and I’m going to trick myself into thinking it’s one of the smaller starter sets so I’m making better progress through the purchased model pile.  Next off – the rest of the Intercessor squad!

Awesome brushwork on that Primaris marine. 8)

And a sobering comparison with the older marines...  :-X

Nice Primaries marine.

Interesting comparison, is the Womble an RTB01 plastic?

Astounding work on that marine! :o Is that just edge highlighting or do you glaze as well? Also what colours did you use for that helmet? That’s rich! 8)

Very nice paint work indeed.

I  know some folks don't like the new supersized marines, but for me they are a marked improvement. Everything except the shoulder pads have been enlarged - the result now is a more balanced figure, the proportions work so much better. You can keep your 1980's big shoulder look, it's Primaris all the way for me.

I also prefer the sergeant helmet to differentiate - the banner just looks silly. It's great painting, but stuck on the back of a fighting figure looks dumb. In my opinion of course.

Very nicely painted.

I have seen your comments on FB and responded to them there in regards to 'scale creep'. The one thing that always shocks me is how people tend to view it as a thing that only GW has done. It's not.

Agreed!
To me the primaris are defacto true scale marines.

Nice painting Curis.

I don't like the new supersized marines. I've always thought that the fluff about them being 8 ft tall super humans was rubbish and the idea of true scaling marines was laughable. I always prefered the description of the marnes from the RT rulebook.

Still, each to their own. From GW's point of view it must be a gold mine, redoing their best selling range so that everbody goes out and builds a new marine army. I'm interested to see whar direction the terminators are going to take.

With any luck, at least for the rest of us who aren't interested, this might mean GW ploughing some of this new found cash  in to some of the indie games that we've been seeing of late.

Andym – the colour for the helmet is Mephiston Red, highlighted with the old Leprous Brown then VGC Bluegrey.

Nord, I do like the size and impact of the new Marines, but they're ogre-sized and the rest of that Intercessor squad is taking me ages to highlight the panelling on.  I do prefer the older generations and am firing those out much quicker at the moment.  Hey ho.

I started off a LE02 Imperial Space Marine homage.
