i'm sure you can use the rifle armed Chineese...the French clashed quite a few time Vs the Imperial Chinese..and the Pavillon Noirs were in fact not simply bandits but proxies of Chinese Gvt..even lead by Chinese generals

In my opinion, you can use the officer, standard bearer and soldiers without firearms but not the rest. In 1883, the chinese army had been reformed and most soldiers had modern uniforms and modern rifles - correct ammunitions and training being another problem...

couldn't agree more...openhanded would be ok as well
because the Chinese almost always had the same look it
makes for easier conversions...still I will make a whole bunch
of new ones...........got to be done really!

as to your last sentence that makes for "interesting" rules!!
