Wish Me Luck - my First WIPs! -First One Completed
« on: June 10, 2009, 05:06:11 PM »
I really do like these Artizan Thrilling Tales Cultists:-

but I want more of them without doubling up on the figures and want some with clubs, coshes, etc.  So I've decided to have a go at making my own using some of the Victrix plastic British Peninisular War Napoleonics as a basis. There shouldn't be much of the original figure showing once I've slapped on the Greenstuff to make the robes, hoods, etc.

I bought a pack of 52 off eBay for £14.50 so that gives me plenty of scope to make mistakes without feeling guilty about the cost.

So here's the first picture:-

I've carved most of the detail off them all, thickened up some of their trousers and started on the first robe.

Feel free to offer all the guidance, advice, etc that you want. Despite having been painting for nearly four decades I have never really had a go at sculpting so I feel a bit of a noobie!  :?

I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Nice to see a step by step progess of a WIP idea. Keep sharing or as they say, keep up the "show and tell".

Thanks Everyone for your encouragement.
I can't guarantee a daily update but will be as regular as life allows.

maybe you should add more minis without doubling them with the PULP one:

I love Bob Murch's figures but his cultists look too different to Artizan's ones so scratch building is the only option.

Well, I've got the basics of their bottom part of their robes done and used white Milliput to smooth them out. So far I'm reasonably pleased with the results:-

Next part is to add a few smaller creases.

Looking at the arms that come with the Victrix figures, their hands are rather small so I am going to have to delve into my bits box.

Looking good so far, and a top idea.  :) I applaud your use of the plastics as dollies, great thinking!

There's been a slight pause in procedings because I thought that I had brass tubing of the correct diameter to do the circle on the cultists chests. Wrong!
So I've ordered the necessary off eBay and in the meantime, sorted out the arms (mainly from GW's Flagellants) and stuck heads on all of the figures, using the originals that come with the Victrix infantry but chopping off the shakos.
I've also had a go at starting the hood things. They are obviously not finshed yet but I'm not really sure how they're going. I thought that the hoods would be a fairly easy task. Wrong again!  :?

Having a go at this does make me realise how skillful you proper scupltors are.

Well, I think I got bit carried away and forgot to photo the figure a couple of days ago but this is where I am tonight with one of them (from four views):-

It still needs a bit of carving away with a scalpel and it needs the addition of a small circle on its cowl.

In general I am reasonably happy with it for my first attempt though I admit that the arms are a bit long. The hands seem about the right size (compared with the other Artizan figures) so I am going to have to carve just a couple of millimetres off to stop them looking like apes.

Now to get going on the others which are a fair bit back in the conversion process.

Looks good. This is a really great project. If the arms are too long I can hardly notice it, if at all.
