Early Imperial Romans - All 10 cohorts deployed
« on: December 28, 2019, 10:11:25 AM »
We have had building work in the house for what seems ages and my wargames room has been used as the builder's store.  So this project has not been photographed as it progressed.  It is not quite finished (but then none of my projects ever seem to get finished).  The majority of the figures are Warlord games plastics and a few metal.  Many are conversions with a few from other ranges and even the odd fantasy figure.  The Celtic opposition are under way now.

The right wing - the dismounted cavalry figures are at the rear alongside some Foundry Legionaries.

The centre

The Left Wing (probably needs a unit of cavalry)

Some close ups
Commanders

1st Cohort with the Eagle

Second Cohort

Praetorians, baggage and a few camp followers

3rd Cohort and artillery

Auxiliary archers and cavalry

5th Cohort (note the front rank are sling armed after Vegetius' description)

Auxiliary infantry

And then you'll need some more auxiliaries.  Then some more missile troops.  Then some more artillery.  Then you'll need some more legionaries.  Then comes the allies.  Then the camp.  If you have a camp. you might as well have a fort, then...  Then you'll have to expand out to some naval troops.  Of course they will need ships.  Then ...

And, of course, I'll need the opposition - Oh look there are several boxes of figures on the work table.  I wonder what they are?

Goodness me - Celtic and Ancient Briton infantry, cavalry and chariots.

Oh, now that’s a shiny collection! What system do you play with them? I ask because I like the rather unorthodox basing.

Unorthodox?  I'll take that as a compliment!

We play the games using a set of rules that a friend wrote way back in the 1970s for our fantasy/medieval/ancient rules to allow interchange of figures between settings (there a few fantasy figures lurking in the photos as characters).  Base sizes are not specified because we use figures of all sorts of sizes from "true 25mm" to "heroic".  There are even a few 20mm figures in some games as small size humanoids.  We also occasionally use OGAM and Broken Legions.

Virtually all our newer foot figures are on 20mm round MDF bases while older ones will be seen on 15mm x 20mm rectangular card bases (or larger/smaller as the figure dictates).

Been a while since I did much with my Romans.  Now added 2 of these home made carroballistae from odd bits and some mdf bases.

That's wonderful...I saw you have Titus Pullo with the bullock cart rescuing Eirene!
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.
