28mm Old West Buildings... options?
« on: July 25, 2009, 07:04:47 AM »
So with Arnica Real Estate in limbo since being sold to Hawgleg, what are my options for 28mm Wild West buildings? Scratchbuilt is an option I'd considered, but with my fingers in so many pies, that's not an option. Ready made = quicker and easier. For me anyway.

Thoughts?

Scratchbuilding those is fun and rather easy and cost nigh nothing but time, plus you get unique buildings.

*Sigh* yeah I know Michi. Though time IS a luxury these days and perhaps I'm looking for the easy way out. Has certainly helped me get more accomplished in 15mm with pre-made resin buildings.

I was looking over at Antenociti's Workshop and his doors and windows in the "Augmentables" section would certainly help I did consider scratchbuilding as they look like they'd pass for Wild West.

Apart from the above suggestion of scratchbuilding there are several nice resin manufacturers out there doing Old West buildings.

Snapdragon/Moondragon has an impressive range including various different frontages and separate backs to make up a variety of buildings. He also does adobe buildings too if you want some Tex/Mex variety.
They have a very stylish look which doesnt suit everybodies tastes which also means they don't mix well with other ranges, but I really like their style.

Hovels miniatures do a very nice but limited range including saloon/hotel, jail, livery stable etc.

If you are willing to pay a bit more for really beautiful scrathbuild old west buildings, contact Colin Rush. He's made all my buildings. For examples check the Town of Imelda blog here http://www.townofimelda.blogspot.com/ (not mine, although some of my buildings can be seen there).

Todd, just so you know, the Arnica range is coming out of Limbo. I scratchbuild, generally, but if I see a nice building, and I'm feeling flush, I'll generally buy it if it fits with the look of my scratchbuilds. I've had my eye on the Arnica buildings for a while, for exactly that reason, and recently Hawgleg Publishing relaunched the Arnica website, and started casting buildings, so it might be worth checking out. I've already put in my order for the five-sided saloon, so that's how close they are to being ready to go! Here's the link:

Hope this helps!

If you can find them the Ertl cow town series are great also a number of the plasticville stuff works really well too. JR Miniatures has a few adobe buildings. If you want adobe buildings look at some middle eastern lines. Old glory does several western buildings. Their resin singles are comperable to the Arnica ones but I didn't like the expanded foam muti-buildings.

HerbyF is right - the ERTL Cowtown buildings can work really well, although if you want to have detailed interiors, they take a little bit of work (although not too much) to get them ready, although they do have detail moulded on the interiors as well. Size-wise, though, they are perfect (except for the barn, which is HUGE...).

Plasticville is a good idea too, HerbyF. I actually have a Plasticville barn, so you've reminded me to see if it fits with my Old West stuff!

Old Glory has a lot of nice looking buildings, and you can buy the "kits" which means, pick a front and a roof style you like and then pick a 3 sided building you can attach these to. It provides a fair bit of variety. They also include interiors.

Wow. Thanks guys. All great ideas. Glad to hear Arnica is FINALLY coming closer to be re-launched. I MAY attempt a scratchbuilt in the meantime and see how it goes.

I second the suggestion for Frontline Wargaming - they're not only good quality at a nice price, but also fast friendly service. I tend to scratchbuild, but use Frontline for all my interior details.

Head over to the Hawgleg forum. There is a section devoted to the Arnica buildings. They are taking pre orders for a run of the first buildings and sounds like they are in the casting process.

I have a couple of Total System Scenic buildings and they're ok. Cheap too!
