Pygmy & gorilla help (crossposted)
« on: 30 July 2009, 07:47:48 AM »
Here is the situation - I have this idea for a Wood Elf army for Warhammer Fantasy that uses pygmies for wood elves and gorillas for the dryads, and I need assistance finding models for them that are not outrageously expensive. Anyone with ideas please post them, as I have drawn a blank - also, if you recommend a model, please link them.

Wood elf glade guard - Foundry Pygmies - I have one set of the archers with funny hats. Are there others to use?

Dryads - I want to use gorillas, but I don't of many that would fit on a 25mm square base besides Foundry, and they are just too expensive to field in two units of 12.

Glade Riders - what the hell could I use for pygmies as cavalry? the Wild Riders I can get away with lions or leopards, but the glade guard have bows and spears...

Treekin - I think I will use either hippos or some really big gorillas - but hippos and rhinos seem like an amusing option.

Treemen - I am going to use the Reaper King Kong and an elephant for the second one.

Waywatchers - these guys are super scouts with very lethal bows - any super camoflauged pygmies out there?

I am also trying to cut some costs here - all Foundry would be cripplingly expensive. Any love for me from the community here?

Did someone say "Pygmies?"

I just bought these.  LINK

No idea if they will suit your needs, but they are FANTASTIC figures.   :)

There's some companies that do pygmies, though with varying styles.

Kallistra and Fenryll come to mind, but I seem to recall there are others.

Are these 28mm? They are in fact pretty nifty.

I found the Kallistra earlier - the boar riders are extremely appealing - but I didn't know Fenryll had pygmies.

I have tons of the Kallistra ones, they are 28mm "scale", so halfling sized. I love em, and they have catapults and boar rider cavalry too.

The only drawback is there is not a great deal of variation and you can't guarantee how many of each you get in a pack. The lack of poses actually works ok for building units, but you will eventually get some left over. And buy another pack. And then have some different ones left. And buy another pack....

Eureka do some nice Pygmies in their Pax Limpopo range, I use them as characters and champions as they are slightly larger than the Kallistra ones. They also have a giant ant with pygmy jockey for a tame monster if you want to go that route.

You might also like to look at the Bebelli Islanders in Black Cat's Skeleton Seas range. They are supposedly "goblins" rather than pygmies, but I find if you trim the points off their ears and paint them the right colour, you'll never know the difference.

I have looked into thi before...  lol

Do you mean the ones I have?   LINK

If yes - yes, they are 28mm.  Possibly on the big side, but then as they are covered in straw "suits" with large feathers and frightening, oversized masks they are perfect for Pygmies trying to look that bit larger.   ;)

Yes, I very much meant those. The first thought I had for these was to give them bows and use them as waywatchers, or leave them with spears to use as wardancers.

The other thing I am looking for is good gorilla models - all I have found so far is an $8 Reaper fig, and a Pulp Figures pack of 3 for $15. Neither is a particularly good choice for units of 12 cost wise.

How about the six-pack baboon horde(s) mixed in with the apes?

A bit on the pricy side, but I might be able to use them...I was hoping, honestly to find just some mountain gorillas, but they are much more rare than I would have expected.

Only £2.00. but unfortunately just the one pose. I have one and its a rather nice little figure. (they also do a family of orangutans if that's any help to you)

For gorillas I picked up a lot of plastic D&D miniatures quite cheaply from 13th Floor. http://www.the13thfloor.co.uk/indexdnd.asp?menu=2

THe issue I run into with these is that I am looking for a natural look - I may go for these guys anyway, but I would need to put new arms on them.
