Army of Ank-Morpok for HOTT 3.2 question
« on: June 21, 2020, 07:54:03 AM »
All,

My wargaming butterfly mind means I'm already thinking of the next project.

One of my favorite rules is DBA, and therefore the transition to HOTT is tempting. I have not played any games yet, but several of my club mates already have armies and we have been talking about playing a small campaign. I find one tricky thing with HOTT is picking the army. With all fantasy open it's a lot of choices! So I've decided to pick a theme from my favorite fantasy book series, Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series, hence the investigations into an army of Ank-Morpork!

I've been through the books again, and the only time I can find reference to a military are: Sgt. Colon's memories and off hand comments (mostly in Men@Arms), and the two regiments described in Night Watch.

Now I've thought about the setting of the books, and in my interpretation would be it's a pre-gunpowder but late medieval army. The mention of regiments gives the impression of a professional military, so I'm not looking to include many hordes or even characters from the books. So the army list might look something like the following:
1x knight general
2x blades or spear
4x bows or shooters
2x riders
1x magician
2x war wagons
Hordes to make up the numbers.

Now my question to the collective brain here. Does anyone have experience with a similar project? Are my findings correct, I'm very likely to have missed something?! And those with experience with HOTT, does the army seem viable? Or would other choices make it more effective?

Thanks!!
LS :)

No idea on the rules/army composition...whatever you are happy with should be the prime determinate, as it’s your interpretation of Disc world so there is no “right way”.

Certainly the theme allows for plenty of flamboyant figures...I’d be tempted to go with almost a landsknecht feel....the bigger the feather on their helm, the more important the officer.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with

Don’t have the rules set to hand and the copy I had was V2 I think having sold the original one on long ago...well I think it has a suggested disc world army list but I guess you may have seen that?

There's 'Jingo' and 'Monstrous Regiment' which have a military theme and will likely give you some more information.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

I've only read the first Discworld book, and that in 1983 or so, but the army certainly looks viable. I'd be tempted to replace the knight general with a hero general, so that your standard 24AP list would run like this:

1x hero general
2x blades or spear
4x bows or shooters
2x riders
1x magician

The hero will be a lot more fun to play with than a solitary knight element, and it'll also allow you to get the army painted up quicker. And you can always use it as a knight element when you've got more troops painted up.

Hordes of the Things is a great game - and it works really well with many more AP than the standard 24. We've played games of 36 and 48AP a side without changing anything (the PIPs roll stays the same; the troops just tend to move in bigger blocks).

Discworld armies were listed/suggested in 2nd Edition HOTT.

Ankh-Morpork (as per Akulas Landsknecht theme) :
1x Knight General (Dull traditionalist aristocrat)
6x Blades (Colourfully uniformed volunteer regiment halderdiers)
5x Shooters (Colourfully uniformed volunteer regiment crossbows)
Stronghold: Open city gate

Alternatives:
Cleric (High priest of Blind Io)
Sneakers (City Watch)
Magicians (Unseen University)

It also gives suggested armies for:
Seriphate of Klatch
D'Regs
Agatean Empire
Agaten Insurgents
Lancre
2025 Lead Tally: Acq: 000 Ptd: 000  Total: +000
2024 Lead Tally: Acq: 397 Ptd: 091  Total: -306
2009-23 Tally:  Acq: 3853 Ptd: 961  Total: -2892

Luggage as a horde base. Impossible to 'kill' it keeps coming.
Death as a lurker. Can turn up anywhere.
The librarian as a sneaker. Because, 'Ook'.
Cohan the Barbarian as a Hero. 'It hish good to have a really nice cuppa tea'
'Cut me own throat' Dibber as a sneaker assassin. Sell the enemy general a
Salmonella sausage, botulism burger or similar.
Rincewind has to be a magician, but I would be tempted to have the
risk of something going wrong.

Seriously, no City  Watch! :o
Sam Vimes as ‘Hero’
Nobby Nobbs as ‘Sneaky Assassin’
Cuddly and Cheery - the chance to introduce a whole base of dwarves.
Plus werewolves, Zombies and trolls, to say nothing of the basic Plod (dark blue uniformed Landsknechts?).

They can even be opponents to the standard military, as defenders of  "The Glorious People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road".

And HoTTs is excellent fun :)
