WIP of Chinese flying junk ('Flunk') in 28mm
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:03:16 PM »
Good evening Gentlemen, I have for your perusal another 'nef' project on the go, this time some Chinese piratey types to use as dastardly foes against my Japanese.

This build will be a bit slower than the last one as I have some commissions that need doing but progress will be steady.

Basic premise is of a flying junk, quite boxy in shape and lumbering (if such a thing can happen in the air  ??? )

There will be a typical junk sail on the top and a scary facial picture on the prow. It's going to be powered by two props, one on either side and steared very probably by a rediculous sized rudder on the back. Armament will be older cannon, large handguns and maybe a rocket battery of some sort. Grappling hook launchers might be present aswell.

On to the piccys  :D

Top three-quarter view

From the bows

Deck view

The two arms are for the props and the planking on the sides will be 'held' in place by some iron strips (well, plastic really). I need some fancy funnel tops aswell, if anyone has any suggestions then please let me know  :D

If Svenn doesn't mind I'll pinch his idea for the Chinese windows on his town buildings and use them on this (far easier than making them  :D )

Piccys are a bit dark as clouds have just come over (bloody typical, naff English summer  :-[ )

cheers

James

Ooh, the Chinese Dragon heads are a great idea!
Also, Houstons guns has a nice Chinese cannon with an open mouthed dragons head for the muzzle.
Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

I've got some of the GW Chaos gun front replacements and I'm going to use those for decorations and I also have some nice parchment paper for the sail.

@ Tom Reed - Do you have a link to the Houstons web site as when I put it in Google all I get are real guns sites  :o

@ Hauptgefreiter - That's along the lines I was thinking and I don't really want to have to sculpt them as I'd make an utter hash of it, do you know of anywhere that stock such an item?

cheers

Great job James :-* :-*
Some great ideas, loooking forward to the WIP. :D
I think the smoking Dragons are a great idea. I will keep my eyes open for anything useful.
I have found some nice pictures of scary chinese faces. I can post them to see if thay are any use?
The only wierd thing is that the pictures are on oil tanks not ships.

Cheers Mac, I have quite a few myself, so no worries there.

Maybe the Chinese are using the aggressive method when it comes to selling oil in a bid to be the Arabs  lol

Howabout something that looks like a paper lantern for the toppers.  Also your stuff is amazing :o

Hello James,
I didn't have an URL at hand, so I had to go through some links I've saved...
A proposal might be the Opium Dragon from Smart Max Store:
http://www.smartmaxstore.com/the-opium-dragon.htm
or the Foo Dog from Reaper:

I want to see the battle report with this one against the Japanese one you did. By the way, have you named them? Will they be flying colours?

For the smokestacks you might look for this cannon from the Pirates of the Caribbean toy line.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M5W96Q/ref=asc_df_B000M5W96Q875856?smid=A1U6WHYZ8KO0Y4&tag=shopzilla_mp_1409-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B000M5W96Q

You can sometimes find them cheap in discount stores. The barrel stripped off the carriage has lots of interesting possibilities.

Thanks for the encouragement one this one chaps  :D

@ bandit86 - I will have lanterns by the dozen and am making the master to cast later. Cheers  :)

@ Hauptgefreiter - The dragon from the Smartmax store is very nice but at the moment a bit out of my price range (had to spend £1800 on the car). I'll keep looking but have a go at sculpting something, you never know, it might turn out alright in the end  ;)

@ thejammedgatling - The Japanese is named the 'Kashima' and I haven't got a name for the 'Flunk' yet, I have a mate at work who has a rudimentery knowledge of Chinese so I might see if he knows of any comedic/suitable names. As to a battle report, I'll need the rules, troops and some sort of table to scrap on first  ;)

@ zebcook - What a cracking find (shame it was such a duff film  ::) ), if the sculpting goes awry then I might give them a go  :D

Cheers again chaps, I should have some more to look at later tonight  :D

cheers

James

Just a small update tonight chaps. I've done some detail work on the cabin.

The lanterns are wooden beads that I forgot I had but I think I'll change them for more 'lantern shaped' lanterns and the finials on the corners of the rooof are the chaos weapon swaps from 40K.

Bugger, I've just noticed that one of the finials is off line! It'll have to wait until tomorrow, I can't be bothered now  ::)

Thanks again for the kind comments  :)

cheers

James

Great idea!   :)

Looking forward to seeing her progress.
