Don't be afraid to check out the Empress Volksgrenadiers. They are absolutely gorgeous sculpts, and probably my favourite 28mm range on the market.

There's a good painting guide here which conveniently has a comparison between Artizan, Empress and Warlord minis towards the end of the post.

I really like the work you've done sculpting smocks over the greatcoats. I've been meaning to try the same in 20mm, but have been hesitating to sculpt over the gorgeous AB figures sculpts.

Cheers and thanks for the link.  I’ve ordered the one set of LMG teams for now so I will get a closer look.  Luckily I don’t need too many figures for this project. But it would be good to have the option.

And I know what you mean about AB miniatures.  I used them a lot for my 20mm collection, they were nice.  But luckily, cheaper...so maybe worth an extra pack to have a go with?

So here it is.  I’m no Paul Hicks but I’m pleased how it turned out.  I actually prefer it to some of the proper metal grenadiers!  Of course...I’m biased!  ;)

My first attempt at painting any 28mm WW2 mini, my first attempt at oak leaf camo.  I’m not going to win prizes, but I’m pleased enough.

Yep. Looks like a Jerry, sounds like a Jerry, smells like a Jerry  ;)

That's a nice bit of work there! If you want some variety amongst your smocks, I like seeing the mouse grey parkers mixed in with the oakleaf. I went with the reversible white for my Germans and got away from having to try oakleaf lol But maybe you could have the odd white helmet cover?

Yup.  I’ve already started painting a couple of others, including white smock.

The warlord SS are a mix of smock and  parka....painting Them Italian pattern?

So I will have a mix of Oakleaf/ white / camo parka and field grey (on some trousers etc)

I may look up another smock pattern but I do like the look of the oak leaf.

I’ve just finished a white smock on one of my mg teams and I’m actually quite pleased with it...which is great, because I don’t usually fare well with white! Lol

I want to try sponge painting white onto helmets.

Quite good job on the painted figure!  :D

If you talk about the Winter Waffen SS box, yes, those parkas are good for either field grey, oak leaf autumn/summer and the italian pattern of telo mimetico. I think the box art also shows some greenish/sandy tones in the style of fieldgrey parkas, which I suppose could be cloth from different factories.

I'll be following with interest!  :)

Cheers all!

So, I’ve completed half a dozen.  I’ve come to the conclusion I like the ones I’ve converted, in some cases more than the proper metals!  I may have to buy another sprue!

Anyway, the two parka wearing chaps, I tried to represent the worn Italian pattern shown here.

Close enough for what I want.
