Feudal (Japan) Patrol
« on: October 27, 2020, 12:06:50 AM »
Feudal Patrol, the Medieval version of Buck Surdu's 'Combat Patrol' is out. Inevitably, I figured I'd give it a go with some samurai.
More info here, but it's more of a rules review than a battle report: https://adcgaming.wordpress.com/2020/10/26/feudal-japan-patrol/

Anyway, here's some photos.

The sleepy village of Takomura.

"Wait, is that a tanuki drinking the sake?"

Oda troops arrive.

Ikki fighters rush to defend the village.

"Wanted for consistent over-acting in TV dramas: Jinnai Takanori"

It's all getting a bit chaotic.

The battle involved lots of shouting.

Osmoses, incredible work as always. You are definitely the King of the Sengoku.

The game sounds interesting. I would not be thrown off by the card mechanic as long as it is explained well by the rules. There is an Old West game called Gunslinger that uses cards in a similar way (although likely not as complex) and it works beautifully. Feels more like fate since dice are in an indeterminate state until shaken or rolled, while that next card is always there in the deck.

Not to mention the terrain and tabletop. Incredible as always.

Also, I downloaded your Gempei Way of the Horse and Bow rules. I also heard the Friday quote about samurai as dogfighters ... maybe I heard it from you maybe from Samurai Archive podcast, but I was thinking of making something based off x-wing miniatures, but since you have put in the legwork on your variant I will definitely play those out.

Great work, man. Take care.

Thanks everyone.

dddd: Sengoku is at least two thirds of my gaming these days. I'm hoping to eventually have rules I'm happy with for everything from 10-a-side skirmishes to big battles and everything in between  :) The card mechanics in Feudal Patrol is basically a fifty-sided dice and a combat results table synthesised into a turn of a card. Very elegant idea I think.

I've since discovered that people have used aerial dogfight rules for ancient chariot warfare as well. Hopefully, I may revisit the 'Way of Horse and Bow' game to add a bit more detail.

That's a great battle report.
Maybe you could put together a Samurai supplement for Feudal Patrol?
Over the coming year we have a good selection of sub-period supplements coming out as free PDF downloads starting with:

November: Meso American
December: Cry Havoc!
January: Border Reivers

but lots more planned for 2021.

I will do a Sengoku version, it's the period that I got the rules for. I tend to take a rather different view to the 'samurai' genre than most however, so it'd probably not be something most people would want  :)

I would love to use this rules for the Boshin War too, nut I fear that's definitely put of the scope of the rules

Coincidentally, we used a version of the WW2 rules 'Combat Patrol' for Boshin War a year ago.

@Osmosis, if you are intersted in writing a Samurai supplement for Feudal Patrol, send me a direct Email (surdu@acm.org).

I'm probably not the best person to do that. I think most of the samurai-specific stuff you see in skirmish rules are based on Edo-period (and later) myths and romanticisations. You'd end up with a Sengoku module with no warrior monks, no bushidō and absolutely no ninja. You'd have to keep fielding irate emails from people telling you how many Stephen Turnbull books they own  :)
To be honest, there's not much in the core rules I'd change for a Sengoku specific mod anyway.

What did you end up doing to take advantage of the shield mechanics? I would think that given the poor performance of Japanese Yumi in the sengoku period that armor might be represented as including a shield for stat purposes, or as having the shoulder protection count as a shield. Could even model it being damaged/destroyed as a shield would be.

I didn't bother translating shields over. I'd be more inclined to reduce the damage of bows, possibly dependent on the range band. But I think bows are over-rated in most skirmish games anyway.
