Use a plane as an terrain element for 28mm game
« on: February 03, 2021, 02:36:16 PM »
Everything is in the title.  ;)
For some scenarios with downed pilots, i need to use a plane (1/48) as an element of terrain.

Here is the first one for West theatre with a Messerschmitt Bf109.

As a wreck, i use a cheap one found at AliExpress.

comparison scale with a BTD 28mm :

The plane is a prepaint one and a very good value for money.

More info about the wip, right here on my blog.

 ;)

Cheers

Lovely idea Eric.(and remarkably cheap.)
I like the fact you've not half burried it in the ground. I've added one of my favourite reference pictures . Just so you can say to people. Not every plane crash ends in a crumpled pile of metal and mud.

Thank you Mark.

Before converting the plane, i searched on google, wrecks and many planes are like the one on your picture ;
simply laid on the ground.  ;)

Seems a good way to crash land - if you want to walk away from it that is   lol

I've seen similar models on the internet (the Hurrican for example) and thought about picking one up - your model just goes to show thet they work great for 1/56th scale wargame models.

Well done on the finish and good luck with the Corsair.

Have you thought about mangling the prop?  If you get a lighter you can soften the plastic (don't go too far and set light to it!) and move it before cooling it (in water would do the trick).

Might be safer to place it in near boiling water then mangle it with pliers?

sorry don't see that post's answer :

i use the hot glue gun nose for bending the propeller  ;)
easy and very fast, without any risks.

Now you can see some wip on the Corsair on my blog.

More pictures of the wip will be added soon :D

Oddly enough I got my son to make one of those Corsairs during the last school holidays. Good break from the computer/ Xbox. None too accurate and ropey engineering but ideal as crashed aircraft. IIRC they do an equally dodgy Hurricane.

I have one of these Bf109s too. In fact, I ordered 4 from China last year. One I've sold off, one I'll be holding on to (for pretty much the same purpose as nervisfr), and the other two will be flogged off soonish as well.

Originally, I wanted them, to quickly build up a German flight line for my pulpy/WWW RPG campaign, but that's not going to see continuation any time soon. so I'll just keep the one to wreck. It'll look pretty good downed in a Dutch field in May '40 (I originally had a 1/48 Revell Ju52 for that purpose, but that's just too big for my table).

Funny aside: many years ago I did the exact same thing with some very cheap Action Spitfire kits for a flightline on the other side. I actually converted one of them, but never got it a paintjob (those came unpainted).

Oh, and this Bf109 is for a multiple ace, so having him shot down might be a bit of a stretch (though not impossible of course). So I'll be repainting the tail to cover those dozens of kill markings ;)

Finally a word of caution for potential buyers; the pictured one has a pretty accurate paintscheme for the Western front, but there are several schemes out there, and they're assorted, so you won't be able to choose. The other three(?) are decidedly less historical...

You can definitely count yourself ,as taking it too easy. If I've managed to finish my cardboard one last year. ;)

I'd seen the conversion with the light and thought it was a cracking idea.So I'd personally like to see you finish it.

here is a picture of the led test. ;)

The led will be covered by smoke evading through the cockpit.
