Today’s quick update is a couple of fire engines ...including a Green Goddess lookalike, especially for Carlos

what would really set the scene would be a Green Goddess fire engine. Nothing says Civil Defence or industrial unrest like a Green Goddess.

It’s not a 100% copy of the classic pump, but the available diecasts are too small, and the only kit currently around (from Fire Brigade Models) starts at Ł90. I found this one on fleabay, which someone had converted from a Dinky toy, and it’s a good enough representation for my purposes.

Re: armed civvies, I’m assuming that the events of my game are set before UK laws were tightened in the late 1980s, so there would be a reasonable number of weapons available...pistols, target rifles, the odd semi-automatic rifle, and plenty of shotguns. My old school in the mid-1980s could have equipped a platoon with Enfields, and Bren guns.

In terms of figures, I’ve got some from Gripping Beast, TAG, Hasslefree, Crooked Dice, Warlord, Artizan, Mike Bravo and my old Apoc Isle project (now available from Crooked Dice) in the painting queue, plus I’ve got my eye on the Apoc range from Crusader, so plenty to be getting on with.

I'm assuming all that included the morris dancers, Hicks' mutton chop line (wherever it ended up) had a couple of good armed civvies in it that I'd used for a similar project.

Many Borstals had Army Cadet platoons:
Sir F. Maclean asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what arrangements are made for instruction in map reading and the use of firearms by inmates of Borstal institutions under his jurisdiction.

Mr. Ross:  The army cadet force at Polmont Borstal institution, the membership of which is about 40, receives such instruction and training on the same basis as other army cadet forces.  The cadet force was revived at Polmont Borstal Institution in 1959. This unit is run on the same lines as other units of the cadet forces, whose instruction includes map reading and the dismantling of automatic weapons. I regard the training and discipline of the cadet force as of value to selected boys in borstal institutions.

We hated them - during the firemen's strike.  They were unstable and a nightmare cornering at any speed as the water tank did not have baffles so the water sloshed around. Several slid off the road.

Your model looks great and the base should keep it stable going around corners!
