stargrave heads on Antares bodies - anyone advise?
« on: 30 August 2021, 11:06:55 AM »
just wondering if anyone could comment on how well the Stargrave plastics heads go with the Gates of Antares figures - the Concord faction specifically?

Warlord used to do some alien 'panhuman' heads for the range, but they don't seem to be available anymore - so I'm thinking of trying some SG ones if they scale ok.

I can't speak for the Concord with certainty, but doing a quick comparison with the Boromite figs I have on hand the heads look like  a good match, particularly the helmetless ones (since the Boromites are themselves bare headed).  Real question is probably less size/scale and whether the necks on the C3 plastics are "innies" or "outies" - the Stargrave ones work best with "innies" where the socket is on the torso.

I do not have any comparison photographs, but...

Freeborn commander figure conversion, the forearms were cut at the elbows and the arms rotated. The grenade hand was used for left hand, the plasma pistol for the right.

The body appears to have a neck socket.

These were built in 2017. Still not added the required greenstuff.

thanks UVS - nice work there - excellent photos.
encouraging re: sockets on the Antares figures - I have a box of freeborn plastics too, so will check that out.

I've ordered a merc and crew sprue, and once I have those will have a play with some Concord plastics and see what happens.

I've asked Warlord CS about the availability of the pan-human heads they produced; no answer yet.

That is a nice conversion. There is some interesting stuff available in Antares range. I would really like to do some conversions with them myself, especially now I have seen this post.

after some fiddling about of my own, I would say that the stargrave heads work well with the Mantic deadzone 'humans' (like the 'enforcers etc).

the Mantic heads are a bit 'Peanut', and don't match their star saga figs very well (lovely big figures, those) - the star graves give nice options.

just an update on this particular point - although I'm not pursuing this approach further, Warlord CS did get back to me and were willing to cast up the Pan-Human heads as a custom-job.

really good of them.

Their customer service has been pretty good the couple of times I've had problems (miscasts, one mispack) in the past.  Not quite Ground Zero Games level of perfection+ but pretty far up there.  :)
