Hayes' 28mm Vietnam Project
« on: February 24, 2022, 09:36:11 PM »
Good afternoon (EST USA),

I wanted to start a running log of my 28mm Vietnam wargaming project similar to what others have done here. I started gaming the period about 2020 and then took a couple year hiatus so glad to be back into it. So far I have a reinforced platoon of USMC and NVA plus terrain, vehicles, etc. I have been using Force on Force with the Ambush Valley Vietnam suppllement.

I will start posting new work here.

Thank you all for taking the time to look.

Here are a few shots of Gringo 40 USMC I finished last weekend. Need to get a lightbox for some better photos.

They look very nice.
Why not show us pictures of the already finished figures?

The Gringo 40's really have a lot of character...quite the best out there at the moment IMO
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

The figs look good, and so does that terrain!  Well done?

Who won the battle the pics depict?

Thanks so much all. Knocked out some more paddy fields this week. Here are some photos of the various steps.

Cutting MDF for bases. I like to do two paddy fields on one base.

I have cut foamboard to build up the dikes, used a knife to bevel sides, and glued down with wood glue

I have covered the foamboard with spackle to blend and create texture as well as waterproof and protect foam

I have primed the fields with the same black spray primer I use on figures, just some satin spray on primer/paint can

I undercoat with a brown acrylic paint. This can also be sprayed on I just didn't have any brown handy

I used hot glue to stick down some long pieces (will be trimmed at end) to look like unharvested grain. I used scenic cement on all dikes to then sprinkle on brown tile grout. I then glue down a mix of flock/static grass to be groundcover on both sides of the dike, then I doused it all with scenic cement spray bottle to adhere and harden the tile grout.

I then mixed Woodland Scenic's Realist Water with brown acrylic paint and poured it in slowly to a depth of about 1/8". Here is a shot post pour prior to popping air bubbles and another further along. I takes AT LEAST 24 hours to cure so be patient and keep dust, etc. away as it is tacky.

I will go back one cured and trim down the rice, add some static grass tufts along the dikes and add sand/drybrush top of dike as needed. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for looking.

The looking is easy. Making it all isn't, so
Thanks for posting. :)

Here is a closeup of a woods section I created by laying down a piece of florist material. This can be purchased at most craft stores. I lightly sprayed it with some tan spray paint to soften the greens and black/brown but otherwise just cut to shape. The nice thing is it clearly shows where the edge of the terrain is.

Nice work on the figures and the terrain.

A more neutral background might help rather than splash out on a light box.
