Thanks guys.

These Roman Extraordinarii kind of came along for the ride as I was working on the Principes. They just needed a bit more work that I completed tonight. I also finished up the bases for them and the Principes too.

Really nice work - I always get excited when I see you've updated this thread! :)

I assume that you're going to dress up the bases all together at the end with some greenery and/ or areas of rough ground?

Thanks guys.

@major, yes. I got a custom printed fleece blanket which I'd like to match with flock. Woodland Scenics isn't going to do it so I'm looking at some other flocks from Scenic Express.

I'm hoping to tackle shields next, I've got some decal paper and liquid film for that so we'll see how it goes.

I spent this week cleaning, priming and glueing shields on the Triarii, Principes and Extraordinarii. I also painted up the Triarii's shields. I glazed one in the recesses to tone down the shading, not sure if I like it yet. Thoughts? I don't know why I spent so much time on the figures, the shields cover 80% of the detail.

Personally, I really like the effect.  :)

Sounds like just the sort of thing I do!  lol

The dilemma of every ancient Roman player ever :)
Nice white shields though!

In reference to the shields covering up your good work.

I always recall an interview with an actress from the old "Gone with the Wind" movie.  The women wore full period authentic dresses with full undergarments.  One day she turned to the director to complain of why they had to wear these items as the audience would never see them.  He turned to her and said "You will know they were there."

So you would always know how good they are behind the shields.   ;)

So what I'm getting out of this is I should keep wearing the Roman undergarments while I paint as it's character building?

I was wondering if red tunics were really uniform in Polybian armies or were they perhaps less homogenous, either within a small unit, such as a maniple , where individuals might have different kit and colored tunics or all the way up to maybe the whole legion being uniform, or somewhere in between?  Do we have historical sources or is just a wargaming conventional practice to make them a uniform red.

Uniform would be highly unlikely, as soldiers supplied their own kit. No actual evidence either way of course. I suspect not even shield designs were uniform at this point but we wargamers do love our uniformed Romans.

Work continues on the shields. I finished them for the Principes and Extraordinarii this week. On to the Hastati next.

The curse of my curious monkey ancestors is that I have now googled "ancient Roman undergarments", how did it come to this? :'(

Subligaculum by the way.
The time of the Orc has come.
