Best solo ruleset for Napoleonic skirmish?
« on: July 23, 2022, 08:28:09 PM »
I have the following books in front of me and I have only played M&T2
Which one should I choose for a Solo Napoleonic skirmish with around 40 figures per side?

Chosen men
Rebels & Patriots
The Men Who Would Be Kings
Shakos & Bayonets (M&T2)

Grateful for your advice!
Many thanks!

I love The Men Who Would Be Kings ruleset, and it would have forces of around 40 miniatures, but its more geared towards asymmetrical forces (tribal vs regulars) during colonial times. Even though you can use it for two sides of conventional armament (say, Pig War of 1859, Russo Turkish, etc), it doesn't really have any Napoleonic flavor.

Thanks for your response! One of my Napoleonic projects is in Egypt and that could be a good test for TMWWBK with mamluks against the French I guess

Having used TMWWBK for the 1st Afghan war I think it would suit for Napoleon in Egypt.

The British have been rolled over several times by the Afghans, sometimes even after they formed close order and used volley fire.

Give it a go..... But let's see some piccies!

R&P would work too, sharing many similar mechanics to TMWWBK. I use them both regularly.

Chosen Men is for much smaller numbers of figures. Not played it but have read it.

Can't speak of S&B

Thanks Emir!

Good summary you provided. S&B works, but all the spelling mistakes in the ruleset puts me off a bit. Daniel Mersey is a trusted rule writer so I guess I will go his way   ;)

Sharp Practice works very well solo, although it is not on your list.
MWWBK will work well for Egypt, I'd think; Rebel & Patriots will probably be better for European clashes.

Sounds like a good plan! Cheers
