The Battle of White Plains 1776

It's been 12 years since my 28mm AWI collection last saw the light of day, but I dug them out last week for a cracking little refight:

Very nice!

Strictly speaking, White Plains is in Westchester County, above the city line in the northern suburbs, but the battle is definitely part of the NYC campaign. Brooklyn (AKA Long Island), Kips Bay, Harlem Heights and Fort Washington were all north of the city back then, well within city limits now.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Battle of the 'Burbs then?

Lovely work on those figures. I reckon my Perry AWI collection is the longest serving in the unpainted pile of shame, so it's always nice to see stuff painted up and played with, albeit it brings with it minor pangs of guilt.

Beautiful looking game!

Does need a dead Hessian with his head ripped off by a cannonball, he will be important later...

Cheers fellas!

Yes, there will definitely be a lot more games in the near future and my mates Andy and Antony are also dusting off their old collections (which you can see in action in the previous article, during the Battle of Germantown, which was our last game in 2010).

Apologies for my geographical ignorance, but 'The Battle of the Burbs' has a nice ring to it.  lol

Thanks for the reminder re The Headless Horseman.  I'd completely forgotten that White Plains was the origin of that story.

I’m always trying to talk myself out of the AWI - this isn’t helping!

This tempts me to get my 20mm Frying Pan & Blanket AWI troops out of their barracks box. And there's the new rules Live Free or Die, offspring of Loose Files & American Scramble, as are British Grenadier.

But various things keep delaying my current Twilight of Rome games. My retreat to Maine later this fall beckons. Might be 2023 before my Continentals and militia defy Crown forces again. I do look forward to more of your games.

Those figures are fabulously painted, nice to see another period down the club!

Well, a very nice game it seems and nicely presented.

I confess, however, to getting quite a jolt with the photo showing the British assaulting the American left flank when Chatteron Hill was on the American right flank!  At least that is what my study of the battle reveals.  Or did you somehow reverse the images (seems not based on your narrative)?   Maybe it is just that the artillery were attacking the left side of Chatterton Hill (which would have exposed their right flank to the Americans).  But it seems I only see the 17th LD attaching to the right of the American position - and I thought the bulk of the attack pushed hard on the American right.  Maybe you have better information than I do.

A comment on the commentary - including all the information about the 'replacement' units, this unit for that unit, during the narrative might have been better placed either before the narrative or after for a better flow without breaking the narrative.   Not a killer but just an observation.

Despite my quibbles, I enjoyed the game report.  And feel free to educate me on the location of units if I am off base!

Cheers, thanks very much! :)

The game was taken straight from Eclaireur's original scenario, but if you look at the extract of map in the article, you can see that Chatterton's Hill is quite a long way forward of the main American line, so the British guns are actually positioned on the left flank of the main British line (where it says 'The Ford', being the Hessian crossing-point).

Yeah, point taken re braking up the narrative with waffle about uniforms.  One day I might actually PLAN an article!  lol
