As others have said- well done - a sufficiently motley looking crew of varied brutes. Certainly the slave army is a good project for those who want ultimate variety and non uniformity. Plus there were other revolts other than Spartacus, and also freed citizens and slaves in Mithridates' Pontic Wars could have such a look, although the gladiators make them look uniquely - unique!

Beautiful work on those! As with the previous units, I enjoy the variety of figures that you have put together and your painting is great.

Nikko, what rules do you plan to use? I only ask as on New Year's Eve I ran a game of  Crassus' Romans vs Spartacus using Simon Miller's To The Strongest.  A fascinating encounter . The score at the end of the game indicated a crushing Roman victory but Fortuna favoured the Romans throughout, and a few different chits could have meant a different ending. I've posted an AAR on the Black Wolf  Wargames blog   http://blackwolfwargames.blogspot.com/2023/01/im-spartacus.html. Not as nicely painted as yours!

SJWi : I will use Impetus rules (as always). When I saw the two lists "Spartacus and slave revolts" and "Later Republican Roman", I thought it will hard to Slave army to win the battle versus Roman army, unless I will play Roman army .... lol lol... (whith my legendary luck !!).
I must paint other legionnaries' units to test the two armies....

SJWi : Could you give me the composition of each army played in blackwolfwargames ?

Nikko, the Army compositions using TTS terminology are as follows;

Roman.

3 x generals
3 x heroes
1 x Roman cavalry
2 x Spanish cavalry
2 x Numidian light cavalry
1 x veteran legionary
4 x Legionary
5 x raw Legionary
3 x Spanish scutarii
3 x light infantry with javelin
3 x light infantry with bow
2 x camps with fortifications

Slave/Gladiator

3 x generals
6 x heroes
3 x raw light cavalry
2 x veteran light cavalry
4 x deep warriors
3 x veteran deep warriors
6 x deep mobs
4 x raw light infantry with javelin
2 x light infantry with javelin
4 x light infantry with sling or bow
3 x camps

The Roman army is based on generic Republican Roman, albeit I reckon Crassus would have splashed the cash to buy some mercenaries plus some of the Legions were freshly levied. The Slave army is based on the TTS list. The veterans reflect the gladiators or those slaves with prior military experience, the mobs other slaves.  It was also all arranged to give a hopefully balanced game.

Thanks for the Army composition SJWi.

I agree with you about mercenaries and Legions freshly levied.
In Impetus, the slave's army have only one light cavalry unit.
I decided to change slightly slaves in roman armor to give them deep.

Nikko, I should add that I wasn't trying to have maximum historical accuracy more a fun, balanced game with a historically plausible basis.  I wanted a bigger game than I normally play to cater for several players and I simply didn't have enough Roman units to go around, hence my "mercenaries". I also wanted to field "raw" legionaries as (a) I think they are historically accurate for this and (b) under TTs Legionary units are very powerful and I wanted to downgrade them somewhat . Despite the big Roman victory I was pleased with the result as being a good game that all the players enjoyed.
