SYW Battle of Aufeld
« on: 04 December 2022, 09:21:42 AM »
When friend Miltiades called me a few weeks ago for a SYW game, I had to find quickly a scenario for Saturday.
My eyes fell on a game played by the author of Honours of War rules, Keith Flint which I had saved from his blog

The Battle of Aufeld
http://keefsblog.blogspot.com/2016/10/the-battle-of-aufeld.html

Our club tables are 6' by 4', so for our 15mm scale I chose us to play with half the number of units.

We randomly chose sides and Miltiades took the Austroimperial army and I took command of the Prussians
The table setup, as allowed by the terrain pieces available, seen from the Prussian side was this:
Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates. – Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi

The Prussians were defending arrayed on a line between two villages, Aufeld and Lengenfeld.

The Austrians had to cross the river Sulzbach at the places where the river is narrow. Where the river widens, is impassable, can be crossed by a single bridge.
We set up our troops alternating brigades, the Prussian defenders first.
The Prussians were allowed to hide a unit of Jagers, probably in the monastery, or in any other place where the enemy could not see at first glance (I chose the woods near Aufeld).

Half of the table, where the two armies were more densely placed

On his left, Miltiades set his heavy cavalry brigade to cross the bridge and some skirmishers to probe the monastery.
At the background is seen the Prussian cavalry, ready to anticipate the Austroimperial cavalry moves.

The Prussian cavalry under Joachim von Zieten, proudly riding ahead, dressed in his splendid hussar uniform
One more regiment of Prussian Dragoons was galloping towards the bridge

Miltiades set up two regiments of Austrian hussars at his extreme right, in an effort to outflank the village of Lengenfeld.
His first Austrian brigade is already crossing the stream

The Prussians arrayed an infantry brigade holding the Aufeld-Lengenfeld line, with a grenadier brigade behind. The Prussians have posted on the hill, behind this line, a heavy artillery battery and howitzers, having ample view of the enemy for overhead shooting.

The Austrians are losing time to probe the monastery in case the jagers are hidden there

I substituted an infantry battalion holding Langenfeld (now in column of march) with grenadiers, to stiffen my extreme left.

The Austrian Feldjager searched the whole monastery area with all its walled enclosures but found no sign of the enemy.

The Prussians covered quickly the gap to their left with the Grenadiergarde, so the Austrian hussars fell back, letting the Austrian infantry brigade march closer to Lengenfeld.
I concentrated all the gun fire against a single Austrian battalion (seen left), which has already got three hits and is ready to collapse

We diced for the reinforcements and by coincidence were bound to arrive on the Fourth round. Here is my Fusilier brigade, marching downhill

My Plettenberg dragoons were quick enough to block the bridge from the oncoming Austrian cavalry

My jagers, ambushing in the woods, surprised an Austrian grenadier battalion, but they are compelled to fall back fast, before to be overwhelmed by two more grenadier battalions who found a passage through the woods, marching against Aufeld.

Another view from above. The Austrians have posted their batteries to pound the center of the Prussian infantry line
