Everybody's gotta live somewhere - Quonset accomodations
« on: December 08, 2022, 11:58:54 PM »
Hello again, I've been out of the scene for a while but I'm still alive, but I have a back-log of stuff to put up on this board.

Here's one of those.   Picked up 2 laser cut Sarissa quonset huts.   The roof is "OK" but only barely, so I covered that with corrugated plastic sheet to make it look more realistic.   I have DELIBERATELY OVER-WEATHERED (hint there is no such thing) the buildings.   Take a look at some real ones online some time.  They're REALLY rusted out and thrashed if they've been abandoned for years and years, which is completely appropriate and even expected for a post-apocalyptic setting.   New looking quonsets just wouldn't look right.

I used the salt-and-hair spray masking method, dry-brushing, and pastel chalks to rust these bad boys out.

So here's the breakdown:

1 - 3   Building number one, thoroughly rusted out with moldy doors and grafitti.   I also put a model railroad chimney on this one as these buildings typically had a basic heater to combat the drafty cold that inevitably seeps through metal sheds.

4-6   Building two,  a little less rusty, but still trash.   The back features not only a model railroad chimney to combat the freezing cold, but it also has a window air-conditioning unit to combat the 120 degree sizzling heat of the desert in a completely inadequate way.

7 & 8   This is a magnet-based storefront that will attach to building #2 to give a little variation.   Corrugated overhang, PSP plating walkway.   Style reminiscent of old west buildings of the American southwest.   Will make a good small outpost, gas station, country store, what have you.

Enjoy.

I like how those turned out. They certainly look like they would fit right into a post-apoc setting. I’m looking forward to seeing additions to this project!

These look great. I agree that there's no such thing as over weathering with these buildings. Every similar type of structure I've seen in real life has been in pretty poor condition.
