1st Manassas in 2mm using Altar of Freedom

Last week I played AoF against a live opponent for the first time.  We both had a great time and really liked the rules.  The after action report can be read on my blog here:

Good report and a cracking looking table. 2mm really lends itself to big battles and yours looked great.

Good looking game really gives a sweeping view of the battle field.

We tried AoF a few years ago - not sure we really got the rules - but I did like the concept of them. I also think the other players really wanted something at a lower representative scale.

Elenderil, my little group tried AofF in 6mm before the Pandemic. We really liked the core mechanics but found the movement very fiddly and it all seemed to take a lot of time. We never managed to finish a scenario in a club evening. I'd be interesting to hear how you actually found it played, as I could then be inspired to give it another go.

Movement is actually straight forward as long as no part of the base exceeds the move distance you can move in any direction and end facing in any direction.  The only restriction is when a unit is inside the enemy units threat zone.

I don’t miss the fine detail such as what type of firearm or artillery a unit is equipped with as I was after a game where it was the high level command and control that was modelled.

I tried it some years back and found the combat fairly indecisive. At Shiloh the Union calmed down after the first couple turns and had a sedate morning pushing back and forth with the Rebs.

I did like the command and with a dozen double-ranked 15mm figures per brigade it looked nice.

Love the "old school" feel to the game.

Reminds me of my first wargame in School back in 1975!
