Brilliant work on the diary. All those die rolls, charts, flicking backwards and forwards in the rules etc are brought to life and given real meaning.

And now, to Hissing Sid. I have a master-plan.

You're doing a really good job with updating the diary, sounds like there's a bucket load of work involved in running the campaign and the diary makes it all comprehensible as well as weaving a compelling tale.

Everyone seems to have had time to train but not on the same day, is that because there's some limiting factor or were Thorvald and Tiffany too hung over to train when Bara and Ilsa did their training?

Regarding the Calvados, I wonder if the Appleblossom farm might distill it from their apple harvest as well as making cider,  if so, could we persuade them to let us have a few bottles after rescuing Tully?

Looking forward to reading about the encounter with Hissing Sid, the Snow Troll from upp north.

Thorvald’s bravery went above and beyond. You’ve got to hope he lived to savour it.

The scenario required three Curious Location Markers. In order to ensure some randomness in the layout, I threw a D10 to select three tiles and then threw a D12 twice to give eastings and northings in that tile. This resulted in these three locations.

Hissing Sid, the Sibilant Troll could be in any of these locations.

Doug did not know these locations and he controlled the movements of Barney McGrew, our chosen scout.

Barney bravely set off on his scouting mission, leaving a marker behind for the rest of the Compagnye to enter, when the troll was located.

Doug sent Barney northwards towards the log bridge across the river. Maybe the bridge was troll-made?

A dice throw brought the first of the Curious Location Markers into Barney’s eye line.

Another dice throw and Hissing Sid suddenly appeared, making low hissing sounds, he approached Barney who seemed, momentarily to be rooted to the spot in sheer terror!

Barney, coming to his senses, ran for his life and soon outpaced the lumbering troll.

The rest of the Compagnye make their way, at speed onto the snowy wastes of the Creamonfurst Mountains. Tiffany makes for a rocky outcrop and casts her Mark spell successfully on Sid.

Bara looses an arrow, as does Ilsa and both miss. Barney, having outdistanced the troll, turned, stood his ground, let fly with his new sling and yes, you guessed, he missed.

Thorvald and Lew Pugh divert into the nearby snow-covered pines with a view to outflanking the huge troll.

Meanwhile, Hugh Pugh uses his bow, but again to no avail.

We gave Sid a chance to smell the two adventurers in the trees, even though he could not see them. Doug said, “one chance in six, he’ll sniff them out” and I duly threw a six, Sid knew they were there.

At this point however, Barney having stood his ground was in closer range with his sling. He let fly another stone and hit Sid, right between the eyes. Our new recruit was proving to be something of an asset. It was a critical hit and Sid’ monster points of five were reduced to three.

Lew with his sling and Thorvald with the J*ck Strap of Desire, both let fly at Sid as he passed their hiding place. Lew hit and dropped another point off of Sid. Thorvald’s hit could not penetrate the tough hide of the troll.

Sid, angered by Barney’s well-place shot, stomped on towards his antagonist, presumably with the aim of crushing him into the ground. Ilsa lets fly a well-timed arrow and Sid’s points are down to one. Bara goes to shoot and throws a one, he’s out of arrows!

Sid manages to stun and wound Barney with his massive club and Barney is forced backwards.

Hugh manages a hit this time with his bow and Hissing Sid, with a great groan, collapses into the snow at Barney’s feet, to the great relief of all. After Barney’s brave stand, we would have been sad to see him stomped on by the furious troll.

The Compagnye reassemble and gaze upon the fallen gargantuan.

The Compagnye are delighted to find a fine warhammer and shield plus a strange map in the possession of the defeated troll.

After a brief pause to ensure that Barney was not going to bleed to death, the Compagnye moved to cross a high mountain pass on their route back to Toastrack Manor. Barney was going to need at least a week to recover from that blow and they intended to leave Barney to the gentle ministrations of Sir Grimsdyke Toastrack’s housekeeper.

Thanks, syrinx0, it was a short game but we enjoyed it. There will be another entry in the diary soon to explain the real reason why Bara ran out of arrows and how the troll smelt out Thorvald.

Unless of course, genuine historical research requires a revelation, in the search for truth. Another extract from the Compagnye Annals, discovered in the attic at Snapcase Hall. The thick plottens!

Great AAR. That scenery  is cool, it looked really chilly there.
The only thing missing was the frosty breath.

You've taken some stunning photographs of the action, they're really good, the scenery is magnificent and the background complements it perfectly.

Thorvald obviously didn't let you in on his plan. Clunge Magnet is an old Yorkshire term for Ogre Attractor. His plan was to distract Hissing Sid so that the shooter boys from the gang of Seven would have plenty of time to shoot him. Of course he didn't recon on the key shooter boy leaving his arrows behind. Such are the best laid plans torn to shreds on contact with the enemy.

Looking forward to the next installment of this adventure.
Cheers

A necessary accessory then, for many Yorkshire chaps….?

Master-plan addendum, sub-section 3. From time-to-time, it’s recommended that the key members of a warband improvise a crisis so that the less accomplished members (eg flamboyant, scent-wearing bards) learn how to stand on their own two feet. Elementary leadership stuff.
