DalyDR's SciFi Stuff (Aliens!)
« on: May 28, 2023, 11:41:49 PM »
I've managed to get a bunch of sci-fi models painted over the past few months and thought I’d take advantage of today’s weather and have a little photo shoot.  Started off with the most recent thing I finished, a Polecat from Khurasan.

I’m a big fan of the overall style, and the model was nicely cast, but for two of the wheels which were fairly out-of-round.  After painting they don’t look too bad though.

I painted it in a fairly basic grey color scheme.  Nothing too fancy here, just picking out all the various blocky detail and doing a bit of edge highlighting to finish it off.  For the first time I tried doing the magnet-thing for the turret, which worked a treat.  I can easily swap out the rocket/missile launcher with the rotary gun, and they even rotate but stay securely attached when in place.  Nifty!  I think I’ll be doing that a lot in the future with other pieces that offer weapon options.

I intended this vehicle to accompany my Pig Iron Scavenger troops, so here’s a few shots of them together.

And here is a comparison with a small armored car type thingy I got from GZG many years ago.

Overall, I think it’s a great model and recommend it.

Aliens!

Every sci-fi miniatures collection should have some aliens, right?  Here are pics of some I’ve managed to finish over the past year.

CP Models makes some of the best alien figures out there I’ve seen, but man, some of them are so fiddly!  Trying to attach some of the legs on the yellowish bug guy looking at his iPhone (!?) felt like trying to tie a knot in fishing line while wearing mittens.

An alien from Reaper Miniatures.  I think he looks very Star Trekky.

A trio of xenos from North Star.  I especially like Mr. Blue Bug on the left here.  Unfortunately he's a tad out of focus . . .

Saurians from Folio Works Ltd.!  I bought these 25 years ago and didn't do anything with them for years.  Going to use them as super-aggressive, slightly dumb berserker-types.  The blue skin contrasted nicely with the ridiculous gold colored armor.  Honestly I didn't try very hard with these guys, but now they've grown on me.  Still have a couple of their heavy-trooper "Thunder Lizard" models which sport super-heavy armor and heavy weapons mounted on their heads, suitably mental.  I liked that you had weapons options with these miniatures, I think like 3 or 4 with each miniature.  I gave the troopers a basic rifle looking thing, and the officers something more ray-gun like.

The aliens, accompanied by some old Grenadier Traveller types (shown in an earlier thread of mine here) and a rando human (from Prince August's "Future Shock" line?) get together for a raid.

Some lovely painting here, and great lighting for each environment! The contrast between the sun's glare in the second photo and the shady woodland in the third is very evocative

This is all very grand, a nice assortment of figs, lovely clean painting and the out door photography with the scenery merging with the natural back drop is superb.
Top marks.

And a couple more picture from the last photo session.

Some Viridian Colonial Marines setting out on patrol.

A squad of Yoyodyne Shigaru with a zero-g glider start a sweep of a jungle outpost.  I really like these miniatures, would like to see a few more poses available on the market.

Lovely aliens.

Also the cleanest paintjob I've ever seen on those Pig Iron figs. They should use your models to sell 'em!

Finally got around to knocking out a few more pieces for games of Xenos Rampant.  Mostly robots.  A pair of big boys to be fielded as elites with super-heavy armor and anti-tank capabilities, and some regular (human) sized robots to be used as light and/or heavy infantry.  Real simple paintjobs, just gray basically, but I think it's effective on these guys.  I like their boxy design, gives them a throwback-futuristic (?) character.  The larger robots were assembled with magnets between the legs and torsos so they can swivel, which was probably more trouble to do than it was worth as it involved a lot of filing, but it's still kind of nice to be able to vary their pose, to some degree.  All are resin 3D models off Etsy.

And here we have an alien hiding from the big boy 'bots, and realizing he may be seriously outgunned.  He's a Reaper miniature called a Bloodcrest or something.  I think I'll dub him a "Hadroxenos", as he strikes me as having some dinosaur (hadrosaur) DNA in his makeup.

Great stuff. A terrific collection you have there.
