Author Topic: Vanvlak's (doomed) summer project: 1000pts 40K 10th ed. force (but which?)  (Read 936 times)

For those of you who don't know me, my greatest strength in model making and painting is not finishing projects; and I am ready to give it another go.

I have not bought the big 10th ed. box - I have models coming out of my ears (the spiky Chaos and Nids are quite unpleasant in that sense), and the last thing I need is another tonne and a half of plastic.

I downloaded most of the rules, and the points; and the 1000-point force option, which gives a rather liberal choice of units is tempting, because:
1) it could mean few models, promoting the slim chances of success at finishing a project twenty-fold
2) it has a faint whiff of 2nd ed (or even Rogue Trader?), with a force composed of some odd warband, such as a Mekboy, escort and a Stompa. At least if I got the force composition right. If I didn't, just let me have my fun  :D

The big problem is, of course, which force? I should manage quite a few without buying anything - Space Marines, IG, Imperial Knights, various Chaos, both Eldar flavours, Tau, Necrons, Tyranids and Orks. If I ignore fancy Ordo Xenos shoulder armour, Deathwatch too; but I would end up buying a shedload of novelty shoulder pads, so better not go there.
I usually mostly enjoy painting armour or beasties, so all these work, at least if the IG force consists of tanks, and if I keep the orks to a minimum (by beasties I mean Tyranids or daemons).

I am obviously not aiming to win tournaments or prizes for balanced army selection! The aim of this is just having a bit of fun.

Currently, the Stompa idea is tempting, but I converted mine so extensively it doesn't really fit the profile. Bubble-chukka Stompa anyone?
Nids are tempting; IG tanks too. Perhaps my old Legio Fausta Space Marines, if I can keep numbers low. So far, those are the front runners, unless the Tau, Necrons or World Eaters pull a fast one.

Lets see if this one even gets past the concept stage.  >:D

Good luck!
I'll need it - last night I was wondering whether to go for Khemri and the I-can-never-remember-their-names-the-AoS-flying-dwarves - and obviously, those are not quite 40K, right?

DAY 2
So this morning I had a look again and compiled six seven lists of stuff I have which could be used in any quick project. It's a slight shortlist compared to the previous one, featuring Eldar, Tau, Tyranids, Orks (Stompa and co.), Imperial Guard (or whatever they are calling them now) (tanks, mainly), Legio Fausta SM, World Eaters. Currently, the Orks, Eldar and World Eaters (surprisingly) are jointly leading the field by a slight margin.

Do iiiiitttt.

Choose one. ish.

Surely bubble chucking orks is fine as long as the bubbles cause lots of damage/summon warp spawned chaos monstrosities and corrupted space marines, so the Eldar detect lots of warp/warpway/webway? disturbances and have to investigate?  ::)

You find yourself faced with the most difficult choice one has to make in the hobby. I wish you all the wisdom you require in these trying times.

As an aside: I simply chose not to choose, ate both the red and blue pills and catch all armies as if they are Pokemon...  lol
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
Find a Way, or make one!

They ended up leading after a trawl of the dungeon store - especially when I remembered the Stompa could carry all the rest of the force, if on foot!
But overnight, I had a half-baked idea for a particular colour scheme I want to try which will not be quite ideal for the orks - and I remembered I have problems with storage of large finished models.
So Tyranids and tau and Necrons are battling for the post - although the Dark Eldar came in from nowhere and could pull it off if they're lucky (that is, if I find the models I am looking for)....

Thanks - I think! I already caught them all (at least the ones I am interested in anyway, although the new what-do-they-call-them-not-squats are tempting). I now have to find the pokeball they're stored in!

I recently jumped back into the 40K cesspit by picking up the Imperium Magazine subscription and found that the Necrons were the easiest to paint, due to the number of contrast paints you can get away with, especially for the “foot” figures.

Ease of painting means more likely to get on the gaming table. Unfortunately, a bout of shingles (located on the face) at the beginning of the year has stopped my painting activities, as I can no longer use a magnifying visor to paint due to residual nerve damage.

Fairly easy to get to 1000pts with Necrons though, even without bigger vehicles. Plus you get to make Terminator theme music noises while you play.
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

Sorry to hear that, that's a blow  :(
Funny you should suggest these guys - I decided to narrow the field to six forces, and then do this the time-honoured way: roll a D6. I got a 2, and Necrons were second in the list, so Necrons it is!

Next - the colour scheme, and dredging up the models from the depths of the cellar.
I should have two Canoptek Destroyers (and one painted one, unless I change the scheme completely), the C'Tan Deceiver, a Night Scythe, a few swarms, Necron Warriors, a Monolith and a couple of others, certainly beyond the 1000 point mark, although the quality of the force will not exactly be anything other than eclectic!
