Nimitz game with Hallmark 1:6000 ships
« on: July 20, 2023, 05:51:05 PM »
Last night there was something different going on at Roach HQ. Peter J. brought his 1:6000 Hallmark ships and Sam Mustafa's Nimitz rules along.

WW2 naval is pretty new to me so my blog post is written with pretty fresh eyes. That might make it interesting as a review of both ships and rules.

Olicana excellent to see other people enjoying some tiny WW2 ships. FYI those ships aren’t GHQ but Last Square. GHQ are 1:2400 and beautiful to behold (almost too delicate to let ham fisted gamers touch and would easily cost you £20 for one bigger ship), the ones you have pictured are 1:6000 from Last Square/Hallmark.

I really like them but wish they’d picked a lane for the bases (the smaller ships are attached to the base and removing it is long winded and leaves you with an amorphous tiny sliver of metal) but they’re still the only producer in that size. I went for 1:4800 from shapeways (wish I could find someone else who printed them as they’re not cheap - but lovely) it’s a great option for detail/playing area but it’s not a well supported size.

I totally agree with you about WW2 naval issue - you’re only generally going to play because someone else has them and then why would you buy a duplicate set. I’m going to investigate the Sam Mustafa ruleset as I hadn’t heard of them and I’m always open to alternatives.

Thank you for posting, apologies for the correction,

I had mistakenly identified the manufacturer so thanks for pointing it out. GHQ ships got a mention before the game and I must have got the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the lines.

We've used Nimitz with 1:3000 scale models to refight the intro scenario and my own simple River Plate scenario a number of times.

The River Plate scenario usually winds up with at least two of the British ships shambled (but afloat) and one lightly damaged and Graf Spee being picked apart by the slow erosion of her weaponry, speed and hull integrity to the point where she has no sensible option but to surrender. Occasionally, Graf Spee gets lucky and inflicts terminal damage on a British ship early on and wins the battle of attrition.

Feels about right as a result.
