ACW SHIPS 10mm
« on: 22 July 2023, 03:12:56 PM »
Looking to find a scale where I could combine actions on rivers and shore. I have seen mention of a 10mm ship line by Jim Brokaw in the US. Does anyone know if these are still available or if anyone else does ships and figures in a compatible scale ?
Many thanks.
Jon

Hi,

Peter Pig make 1/600 ships and blocks of figures for land actions: https://www.peterpig.co.uk/7%20ACW%20shipsl.html

What actions do you want to depict? Battles like Belmont or Shilo? Or small skirmishes and landing parties?

I'm working on ACW naval rules that also give the option of playing landing operations (such as at Galveston Bay), but ship-to-ship combat will be at the center. I use 1/600 ships and figure blocks, albeit not the Peter Pig ones - I'll 3D print them myself.

Best,
Thomas

Interesting - many thanks.
I thought the Peter Pig ships looked pretty crude to my eye.
As to rules I was taken by a set I have seen on-line from Scary Biscuit Studio or something fairly whacky sounding. Looked lovely with ship cards, markers and so on.
Need to do more research.

Yes, the PP ships can be a bit crude (some more than others). However, as Bay Area Yard only has a tiny selection of ships available in 1/600 and Thoroughbred changed to 1/1200, it's not easy to find ships in that scale. That's why I 3D print most of mine (although I got a couple of PP and Bay Area vessels).

I've pondered if I should change to 1/1200, as the selection is much better, but I've already got a sizeable collection in 1/600, and I like the look of the larger ships, even though the smaller would be more practical...

The only larger ships I've seen are from Old Glory in 15mm (https://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=15mm+Ships+Civil+War) and occasional models in 28mm, which, however, most of the time are grotesquely distorted to fit on the table...

Thinking maybe wouldn't be too hard to scratchbuild ships in that scale, monitors and stuff anyway...
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

By the way I wouldn't discount Peter Pig. Yes the models are cruder than Thoroughbred, but I've found them to be perfectly acceptable as "wargames pieces". His rules are quite nice but maybe a  bit more "beer and pretzels" than some. As has also been said he also produces some 3mm land forces and rules for complementary land battles are available as a free download.

Jim Brokaw's 1/200 range (Old North State Models) went to Old Dominion Games Workshop but they no longer carry it. Maybe ask them if they are available elsewhere.
