A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....
« on: July 23, 2023, 12:20:07 PM »
A long time ago, I bought Imperial Assault, thinking to paint the miniatures for some Star Wars gaming. Then, Star Wars Legion came out, of course in a different scale! Recently, I was looking at AKULA's excellent thread here, where mention is made of getting some resin-printed 40mm figures. Having trawled Etsy and eBay, I was hooked. There is just such an array of choice. Obviously, OSHIROmodels is also a great source of inspiration and Star Wars knowledge. I own a couple of superb terrain pieces made by James, for an X-Wing Miniatures game with my granddaughter. I have a sort of an idea of using X-Wing models and FfoL  Starfighters! rules and then on planet, using Star Wars Legion scale miniatures to battle it out, face to face, with FfoL Galactic Heroes.

As a fan of The Mandalorian on Disney, I had to get some Mandalorians. I also got some Twi'leks and some Tusken Raiders. I've not painted enough yet for a game, but I thought it might be a plan to keep a painting log here.

I'm considering buying the core set of Legion, as it seems quite a good deal for the minis. But my main interest at the moment, are the lesser-known figures, in the cantina, the smugglers and the general riff-raff!

The aforementioned OSHIROmodels terrain in action. The landing pad with the white shuttle and the power-generator are from James.

First off, my first two Mandalorians. This is the first time I've painted in 40mm scale and I'm finding it a bit tricky to get all the details done neatly.

A couple of Twi'leks.

A Tusken Raider.

...and finally, I saw AKULA using this model on his thread and remembered I had one. I'm calling him Harold; Heavy And Rotund Object Lifting Droid.

...more to come (but probably slowly)!

That seems to be roughly the height of the Legion models? Are they 1/46, or maybe 1/47?

This is the way!

I think you’ve done a jolly good job on the 40mm. Another Snapcase project; one thing we know is that there will be no half measures as we can see by what you’ve done already.

A butterfly flaps it's wings in Devon and earthshattering results follow. An excellent start. I read Jim's thread a while ago and did get a Star Wars itch but the soothing cream helped no end and I think I'm over the worst of it now.

Nice looking figures, and painted stylistically different to your more recent output, I guess 40mm is quite big in comparison.

I'm calling him Harold; Heavy And Rotund Object Lifting Droid. is his middle name Tonka or is that just a nickname?

it is so very easy to get caught up in Star Wars gaming.  The universe is so expansive and diverse.

Too true. Some Guavian Death Gang figures have just caught my interest!

Vaggers, Tonka is his nickname, as you suggest! He's a JT4-A droid, from Cybot Galactica Corp.

I think the eye height may be 35mm, the resin-print figures I have which are sold as Legion scale, are 40mm from base to top of head. I've not actually bought any Legion figures yet!

When I started looking on Etsy and eBay, what got me interested in Legion scale was the sheer amount of different figures.

Just ordered some Guavian Death Gang figures and I have some Space Smugglers on the way!

That's quite right. I dipped my toe into it and got sucked in completely. Here is a comparison of a certain princess in "Legion scale": Legion, 3D print, resin cast by Brother Vinni   :D

Nice work.

I am slightly put off by the requirement to change the scale from regular Heroic (StarGrave/Anvil/HasslleFree/Crooked Dice) figures. Admittedly the TTCombat buildings are of a broad scale that they will probably fit.

There is also the cost of the initial buy in for the official figures (and I lack a 3D printer and experience with  buying them printed).

I have a small but growing collection of 40mm figures that I started about a year ago. Can't explain why just got hooked on that size (which I understand to be 1/43rd scale).  The new shatterpoint game is in 40mm and there are options appearing on the net now.

Legion is like 40mm including the base?  All I have done is take some legion figs, use a 2mm base and add about 2 or 3mm height in the legs and I end up with a fairly convincing 40mm figure.

My painting is way inferior to the incredible skill shown here but I will get my A in G and post soon.

Thanks for sharing it's very inspiring!
