Victrix 12mm WWII figures
« on: November 28, 2023, 07:40:16 PM »
I ordered a bunch. How should I prime them? I assume hard plastic, so my spray primer for soft plastic not needed? Will just my ordinary black or grey spray primer OK?

And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Yes they are hard plastic - so treat as any other hard plastic wargames figures, or model kits.

They are not like bendy airfix figures.

I just primed with black gesso like I do for most other stuff - but spray primers should be fine too

Pick up some of the Vallejo hobby sprays - they come with most major combatant's infantry colours.

Two more questions:

Need to wash these to rid the mold release stuff, like the softer plastic figures?

Plastic model cement for those figures that need to be glued?

No need to wash, and plastic cement will hold them. Victrix make PROPER plastics, not the mushy soft bendy type!

There seems to be plenty of people around who paint acrylic direct to hard plastic without washing, so I can’t argue against that …. However :-)

My preferred method is;

Wash the sprue in warms soapy water with old tooth brush, rinse and leave to dry

prime with hand brush using Vallejo Surface Primer (I think this is also air brush compatible, it is thin and easily and quickly covers the figure). I use the black.

Heavily dry brush in white,

Good to go.

After the figure is painted, I matt varnish by brush - again, I know with plastic many don’t varnish, but my wash leaves a sheen that needs matting off and I like a varnish protection.

I will never win painting awards, I paint just for the table and for the heavy handling of wargaming and I think the prep of washing and priming gives a good foundation for what follows and the life of the figure. For metals I use rattle can primer and a gloss varnish, followed by matt.

I like the brush on primer as it makes a good alternative to the toxic aspect of rattle cans.

I’ll second your Vallejo Primer recommendation - I use it through an airbrush, and have for years. It works so well I even use it on goalie masks that I paint - and they take frozen pucks at 100kmh!

I also use matte varnishes on miniatures, again usually airbrushed, but I find that Testor’s Dull-Coat is still a favourite… probably the only rattle can I keep on standby.

I primed mine with wraithbone from GW and used contrast paints, very fast at that scale.

Always wash plastic be it kits or figures, the moulding process uses various release agents. Not washing probably makes no difference but for the sake of 10 mins easy work why take the risk.

Victrix is killin' it with their 12mm releases.  Makes me actually almost regret starting 15's.  However, it'll be a long time before the range is big enough to really justify.  They're murdering PSC/FoW in my opinion with the content of their latest boxes (bags?).

Interesting. I’m a huge 10/12mm fan, and was really excited when the Victrix range was announced - but I have bought very little of it, as the cost per model is higher than in metal, and for most of the vehicle kits there is very little variety or options on the sprues. Eg the Pz IVs come with schuzen moulded on.

Compared with PSC 15mm kits which come with huge numbers of options the Victrix ones seem really limited.

Given the low figure count needed for 02 hundred hours - I’d think Pendraken is a better option - they have a fair few commando figures already. 200 Victrix commandos is perhaps overkill!

I’d like to see the earlier war stuff, especially for France and early eastern front.

They don't do DDay commandos unfortunately

Not 1 Tommy gun or burgen amongst them
