Gnolls in Spaaace
« on: January 20, 2024, 04:50:59 PM »
I had some fun before Christmas kitbashing and converting Frostgrave Gnolls with (mostly) Warlord WW2 sprues (there are a few Stargrave parts in the mix as well). The chainsaw is from a post apocalypse survivors box.

The Alpha is a Reaper Gnoll. He was figure of the month when I bought a bunch of stuff, and then they threw in a second one as a sample on a subsequent order. I didn't need two fantasy ones, so greenstuff, procreate and bits-box later, I had a very angry Space Gnoll.

Just finished poking them with the hairy stick. Mostly contrast paints, apart from the metallics

edited to add a couple of pictures I'd missed, and edited again to fix a whole bunch of links that stopped working...

Yes indeed, they do look great

I have a sprue or two of Gnolls and the bits box so I'm going to have to copy
No dear, they are not toys, they are models

The common shoulder size across a lot of figures makes so many things possible at the moment. It's just about the first thing I check for when I buy new figures - will the spares work with other sprues?

The one concern I had was that they were going to be scruffy Gnolls with nice sleeves, which seemed wrong. I tried to create a ripped cloth look, but it took a lot of time and didn't really work. In the end I went with patches of greenstuff, which broke up the surface better. I created a few wrist and arm straps, but I ran into a lot of unexpected problems when trying to get a strip of greenstuff to sit and behave like a strip of cloth :(

I was thinking of just cutting off the hands and replace those with different weapon options.  Some Kroot Jezzails would be my first try

The hands would be a different style but I'm hoping to get away with it - certainly on the table 3 feet away

Great work. Love them.
Thanks for sharing.

You gave me an idea to convert old GW plastic skaven to space beastmen, feral or aliens.
Something like I did at the link below but scifi. I bought a stargrave sprue bundle & they have loads of spare parts.

Would be good for 5PFH also.

That's the Skaven from the old Advanced Heroquest box. I painted all of them up years ago, and every time I look at them I wish I had done something to break up the monotony of the pose :'(

Short, angry Beastmen work well with them :)

Thanks folks  :D

Love it. Nice, simple, clean conversions and painting.

There are some figures that want to be converted, and some that don't. These were very much in the former group, which makes working with them fun. It also helps that Gnolls are the sort of creatures that really work with the slap-chop method.

Note - I did check that the pictures were working when I posted, but I noticed mid-week that most of them were no longer showing. I've redone the links and they are all there again, for now anyway...

Very nicely done.

I've half wanted to do something a bit like thus for a while, but have not really been sure what end purpose the gnolls would serve.  I had half thought to run them as a Necromunda Cawdor gang, but that slot's been snaffled up by the Sisters of Battle conversions I'm working on at the moment.  Gnolls in Space shall remain in the back of my head as an idea though, maybe some day I'll find the niche to fit them in to.

My plans for them are more 5 Parsecs related, where I see them as either a pirate gang, or mercenaries for hire. They could also be used as a random event that turns up in the middle of a game.

I'm sure I'll find a use for them. It's not like I have drawers filled with figures I have painted but never use ::)
