GNOLLS... seriously?
« on: November 05, 2016, 10:48:43 PM »
Greetings!

I personally think the sculpts are very nice but... Do anyone really play Frostgrave with a Gnoll warband?  :o

If I'm not wrong Gnolls are the main enemies in the expansion: "Into the Breeding Pits"
So even if you don't fancy making a Warband with them, the kit is still useful to fight against them. Plus you can use their weapons and accessories to kit out the Soldiers and Cultists sets.

Why not?

And hey, Otherworld has a great looking gnoll shaman that'll fit right in, if you want to go all the way and have a gnoll-themed Wizard band.

Plus it's good to have options regardless. I'm sure there's folks playing other fantasy games who appreciate having an affordable boxed set of gnolls on the market.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

I love the otherworld gnolls. Best ones out I think. A little pricey but maybe I'll have to do a purchase of them.
As to the main topic. They fit with the fluff so they would fit nicely if you wanted to create a beastcrafter warband. Same as Elves and dwarves except Gnolls are specifically mentioned in Frostgrave (don't think the others are) so probably more suitable than other fantasy races.

Great for use as general 'beastmen', too.

A friend of mine is building a warband with gnolls modeled on the 'Heroes III' Fortress faction. He's also doing lizardmen, dragonflies and some human slaver-wizards.

Why is this even odd to anyone?  Frostgrave doesn't differentiate between races with stat mods, and gnolls are no weirder than elves or Dwarves to me.  Plenty of figs on the market for them, although my personal favorites (the 2000-ish Chainmail Naresh figs) are getting hard to come by these days.

Last time I played Frostgrave, one warband was lizardmen and the other was goblins. The Frostgrave gnolls seem to be well set up for creating the various "soldier" types.

Don't see why not. It's all about the looks you like. I'll be doing an Illithid wizard soon with a gnoll warrior amongst his war band.

I just miss a miniature suitable as apprentice, Otherwise I'd be using my Mordheim Skaven as warband in Frostgrave :)

While not ones that mix and match with the official ones, the Reaper ones are fun for a warband.

I agree that they're great, but I actually think the Reaper ones mix with the Frostgrave ones just fine as leaders and champions and enforcers. There's no reason for gnolls not to exhibit more variety in size than humans do. After all, a female spotted hyena can be 1.5 x the weight of a small adult male - and three times the weight of a small adult male striped hyena.

One other point: the Reaper and Frostgrave gnolls have the same type of digitigrade legs, which makes them fit well. Some other gnolls - Ral Partha, Essex (pictured here on the right) and the old Citadel AD&D ones - don't, which makes them less compatible for those who care about such things.
