Sand Pebbles ship San Pablo in 28mm?

I think a good colonial gunboat stern wheeler would be a nice basis for converting to the movie ship - best I can come up with.

 If your going to kit bash you could just as easily scratch build one.
What I'd recommend is building a generic gunboat rather than the San Pablo proper.

I've knocked up several generic gun boats from basic house hold recycling such as cereal packet card. Or if your feeling flush some 3mm grey board . I'd be more than happy to talk you through building your own or just have my brains picked ( such as they are)

Very nice that, and thank you for the offer, was looking around and saw a shed wars steamer being built as well from foam and board, will try that way. Cheaper than kit bashing.

Had you asked two years ago, I would quite happily have gifted you mine. Admittedly the postage would have been steep. When I moved house I decided it wasn't something I fancied carting with me. It had suffered some minor damage, sat unloved in a cupboard for several years and I had moved on from when I built it. Sad to say it ended up being binned.

Fairly easy bit of scratch building. The basis of the hull was a balsa wood plank about an inch thick, cut and sand papered into a boat shape which was then clad with very thin plastic card. Securing the card while the glue dried and doubling as rivets were pins from a sewing set. Deckhouse and upper works were plastic card, the funnel a thin plastic tube and barbeque skewers as masts. I doubt the basic build put me back more than $30, I probably spent as much again buying davits used by proper ship modellers. Twas not a scale model but it did look the part.

I'd encourage you to try the same. If you can cut a prow and stern shape in balsa or high density foam then the hardest part of the build is done. Were I to do it again today HD Foam is precisely what I would use, it jut wasn't readily available when I started. Cardboard from a cereal packet is just as good a plastic card for cladding.

No worries it's a very easy build from both plastic or card as it little more than a series of boxes on plank .
As for the deck furniture it's readily available as 3D prints on Etsy and eBay.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with,and what it costs. As getting as the costs as close to zero,as possible is always a bonus.

A few months ago at Mini-Wars in Buena Park, California, I played the Chinese in a terrific Sand Pebbles game run by that same legendary gunboat builder and Game Master, "Last Stand" Dan, seen on the right below, opposite my helmeted American opponent on the left:



Needless to say, Dan built all the boats, including the American Navy gunboat, USS R. W. Welch...



Great boats in a great game...



And no surprise, I enthusiastically second JBaumal's recommendation above...



...and that has nothing to do with the fact that the Foreign Devils failed to run the boom and the Chinese under my command won the game!

Thanks for the replies, those pictures are excellent, looking at what i have done so far, makes me feel inadequate . I have no idea how to post pictures on here, which is probably a good thing!! So far i have a hull from foam and cardboard.

Good choice going with the scratch build looking forward to seeing it, there is a tutorial on posting pictures on the LAF do a search, you can even save your pictures on the gallery here and then link them to your posts if you do not have a hosting service yourself.

Bought this scratch built gunboat model from a friend of mine a decade ago. He had built it for a game about 15 years ago. The rivets were heads of pins (silly difficult way to do it). Many parts came from Reviresco. Originally built as the fictional French gunboat "Le Coq Feu," I've more recently used it as a gunboat of the fictional banana republic called Parador.
