Funny enough, my daughter was listening to a band the other week and I found myself in the unusual position of actually liking her music. It had a real electro-eighties vibe to it with a female vocalist who reminded me a little of Blondie. The band's called Metric (I'd never heard of them) and apparently they've been around for 20-something years. I like 'em!
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

It seems that nobody mentions videogames soundtracks which are often very atmospheric!  :)

The problem is syncing any  high intensity sound tracks with high intensity moments in the game.  unless you want to jump up and re-cue the music every ten minutes, it’s never going to match.  Buildup rates vary.

Frankly, noise to signal rates are diminished by most music when you are playing.  Having to shout the combat result over the crescendo of Saucerful of Secrets doesn’t make for a good time even if they sync.

There are some great soundtracks with lower intensity out there as well though- I’ve never played Octopath Traveller but I find the soundtrack very useful for gaming purposes :D

Gaming soundtracks? My absolute favourite, even after all these years, is the one from Deus Ex Human Revolution. Absolute perfection...  :-*

Interesting. Haven't been able to listen to Eno's ambient works for years but I do regularly roll out 'Here Come the Warm Jets'. First 'Japanese pressing' I can recall buying.

I'm currently gripped with nostalgia for Les Rita Mitsouko.

and a little bit of the sublime Françoiz Breut, who I was lucky enough to see live some twenty years ago.

I grew up punk, so punk is the lion's share of what I listen to. However, I can't listen to it while I work (data egineer) or game. At work, I usually listen to either synthwave or old school instrumental ska. music without words that might distract me. When gaming, I like to also spin music without words and on lower, background volume. This could be synthwave, movie/tv scores, John Carpenter albums, etc.

Look out for her album Vingt à Trente Mille Jours. It's an amazingly good record. Much of it written by her ex, Dominique A, who is/was a big star in France.

Something of a similar vintage but from a completely different angle is DJ Dolores' Aparalhagem. He's one of the best proponents of manguebeat. I can't listen to this without being transported on to the back of a motorcycle ridden through the streets of Recife at midnight by a beautiful woman. Definitely in my best albums of the past twenty years list. Have a particular listen to the tracks Sanidade and O Medo Do Artilheiro.

Since I've gone all 'world music' on you. It would be remiss not to include tow of contemporary Africa's best artists, both coincidentally from Mali. Rokia Traore and
