Il Carnevale di Scattocaso
« on: March 21, 2024, 02:24:59 PM »
I have been looking at TTCombat's Carnevale for quite some time. I did some deeper reading (and watched the TTCombat and  OnTableTop videos on YouTube) and decided to go all in. The rules themselves are free to download, but the full Carnevale book has some 200 more pages devoted to some lovely photos and artwork and a massive background story to the Rent in the Sky.

To quote the resource site:

‘What is Carnevale?
Benvenuti a Venezia!
Carnevale is a small scale skirmish game focused on freedom of movement combined with brutal combat and impressive magical abilities. Jump from rooftop to rooftop to hunt your opponent’s gang, or dive deep into the canals to drown your enemies.
A truly narrative skirmish game, Carnevale is all about telling a story within the weird world of Venice under the Rent in the Sky. Join one of seven different factions, raise your gang, and fight out for your corner of the City of Canals. With an emphasis on narrative gameplay that uses the multiple levels and winding streets of Venice mixed with ancient horrors, Old Gods, sociopathic Doctors and many more, this is a game unlike any other you have played.’

I particularly liked the figures, the Patricians and the Guild especially.

I had a few bits and pieces from their Streets of Venice range already and dug them out, as a start.

So here goes on a brand new project. I ordered the Carnevale 2-Player Starter Box:

...and the Venetian Quarter for my scenery:

A large parcel arrived very shortly after the order went in.

Immense excitement here at Snapcase Hall, as I unpacked this cornucopia of wargaming delight!

I started work on the Crisostomo Tower first. Although I have renamed it, La Torres di Santo Vagabondini.

(You should ignore the background to these photos, there is an Old West game in progress)

I'm quite pleased with the way my first Venetian building turned out.

This afternoon, I started work on the Casa Elizabeta. This has of course, been renamed and is now La Casa di Scrotobini.

More to come, as long as I can maintain the momentum.

Added a statue of the venerable Santo Vagabondini to the tower. Santo Vagabondini is the patron saint of vagabonds.

I am looking forward to this! Sounds like a good vehicle for future madness with the usual suspects. Good work, stay the course!

Santo Vagabondini is indeed a Saint of great renown. Any square with a dedicated tower to his  feats will no doubt amaze us all.

Excellent! You are doing a nicer job on the buildings than I did. What is your technique?

Be warned, that is the same set I started with and now I have about double that!

Ooh, this is a fantastic start. I'm looking forward to seeing this develop. I've been sorely tempted by the Carnevale setting, but I've managed to resist so far. Perhaps you'll change that!

Firstly, thank you all, for your kind comments.

Sunjester, I decided on a very basic technique, in order to get through so many buildings. So, it is just primer, colour and then wash. I wanted the buildings to be various colours and so in contrast, the woodwork, facings etc. will be in white (with a wash).

I have picked one of the smaller buildings to follow, this is the Casa Elizabeta. Renamed in my world as La Casa di Scrotobini.
