New series of Doctor Who...

Its been an interesting series, and we are already half way through and each story has been quite different.
Last week was  the disturbing ghost story.. Im thinking MR James and Ramsey Campbell.

This week it was Black Mirror.

Doctor Who is often at its best when it channels [ie nicks] varios sources.

I dont think we are going to get a traditional runaround with old monsters any time soon, though we WILL be getting UNIT.

Also two Doctor Lite stories in a row feels odd. That was the sort of thing you'd get one of in a 13 episode run.

last week with the fairy ring/ghost story was intriguing, kept us guessing "whodunnit".
reminded us of the Davison/Baker "Watcher" in a way.

the latest one was very dark, very enjoyable.
quite a high bodycount and interesting monster.

Having caught up with the latest 5 episodes I have to say my opinion has changed. Episodes 3-5 have been much darker in mood, and have had intriguing and varied story lines. I am certainly inspired to watch more of the series, it has much improved on the first two episodes (which I still think were blah!).

The reviewer in Private Eye thought so as well.

The most recent episode was the first that really caught my attention this series...then kinda lost it at the end which felt a bit tagged on.

If my daughter (10) wasn't enjoying it we'd probably have stopped by now.

Never watched much of the pre Ecclestone Doctors...except Sylvestor McCoy when I was a kid and I don't really remember much of him. In our house we all liked Eccleston and Tennet but it all got increasingly wishy-washy after that. For us, David Tennet is the Doctor.

I'm with you on David Tennant being my favourite Doctor but the ending was what made the show for me. The inhabitants of Finetown slowly go from a bunch of helpless, mildly irritating targets we feel sorry for to being revealed as a bunch of self serving, self absorbed, over entitled, white, rich kids sailing off to oblivion and the Doctor has to deal with the fact that he can't save those who don't want to be saved (by the likes of him!).

I've liked the series from the off and feel it is just getting stronger and stronger.

Am I just a cynic or does Russel T Davis not like modern society much?

some of us are old enough to have started in black & white.
I liked Hartnell but was surprised/puzzled/confused by the first regeneration into Troughton, and it took a while to get used to the changeover.
But Troughton faced some classic opponents.

Liked this latest episode as bringing it back to a dark storyline, and one where the doctor cannot automatically win the day and save the planet.

Well I liked tonight's. The Boy, now 12, said it was the best of the series.

I'm liking Ncuti Gatwa so far, I just wish he'd stop the quiet serious line followed by the massive affirmatory shout.

"Everyone you know is dead, and you're going to die too and I'm so so sorry there's nothing I can do about it....
EXCEPT BE FABULOUS FOR THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES!"

I know, that's the script and direction, not the actor, but it's the one thing about Dr 15 that's starting to grate.

The reviewer in Private Eye thought so as well.

Two words (5,4), owner is a non-dom for tax purposes.
Said 'paper still gave the first two episodes a good review.

Working that out was actually more entertaining than the series has been.

Did anyone watch the omnibus version of Pyramids of Mars (top and tailed by 15 and Ruby) last week?

Great continuity,  the voice artist for Sutekh was the same person.

Yes we caught the "Tales from the Tardis" and thought it was a good idea.

We also spotted that "Sister Boniface" had a SF episode this week "Professor Y".
Utter bunkum but some interesting costumes
