Midkemia/Riftwar/Magician
« on: 05 October 2024, 04:54:06 PM »
Can anyone point me at any miniatures intended to be based on or just happen to be like troops and in particular characters from the books? Also how big should the various types of Dread be?

3D print also ok.

I've no knowledge of the Riftwar books, but I do know that the otherworldly invaders in the books are based on the Tsolyani from Tekumel. Tekumelcollecting.com has links to official Tekumel miniatures (Ral Partha made some decades ago) and - perhaps more usefully - a list of proxies from other companies here (including some that were used in the original Tekumel games).

So if you can work out what the Feist books are riffing on from Tekumel, you can probably find some suitable miniatures there.

I love the Rift War books and have often thought of doing a project based on them.

Smaller dread probably around 40-50mm. For the larger ones, what ever will fit on the table  lol

For the Midkemia troops, I think something like the soldier types from the below link would be suitable. Either those or surcoated medieval types.

This is a cool idea. I can't remember too much but in my mind I didn't think the dread overly huge just malevolent.
Love that link their, never knew their were Krull minis!

no idea about any of those books, but wasn't someone doing a range of Tekumel minis recently - I recognise the name... was it Axlbates?

In some of the later ones they read as very large.

Well worth a read. His has done a lot but the Magician trilogy is fine on it's own.

I think most medieval fantasy models would work fine!

Did you ever play Betrayal at Krondor? Lots of visual inspiration in the game and manual.

If I ever see anything that might make a good Jimmy the Hand will drop it here.

For the Tsuranuanni I was once going to convert up some Perry samurai :P

That's a blast from the past  8) My cousin had it when it first came out and I used to go round on a regular basis to play it  lol

I would agree with suggestion of Tekumel miniatures.  I have every now and then toyed with the idea of doing the Rift War, but I don't need yet another unfinished project.  The Tekumel miniatures always seemed ideal - the armour and weapons fit with what I picture.  The one thing I got stuck on, is what would I use for the Cho-Ja?

I found it impossible to complete without walkthroughs. Insane level of difficulty in the latter chapters  :o The story line was so good though!

Its should still be on the internet somewhere. I think its a rare case of something being better than you remember, rather than just nostalgia.

Thri-Keen miniatures might fit Cho-Ja nicely
https://shop.wizkids.com/products/d-d-nolzurs-thri-kreen?srsltid=AfmBOorlkASM5fpSI4JrtVa-ctmEKQ89hf-x5y1i3l-8jAuOhadLQyGj

It has been a long time since I read the books, but in my head the cho-ja were never upright like those minis. They walk on their 4 rear legs with only their forelegs used as "arms". At least that is true of Tsurani cho-ja, maybe the independent cho-ja mages at the end of the Empire books walked upright, can't remember.

I don't need another project, but I would love to do the desert men/Minwanabi vs cho-ja and Acoma campaign from the Empire books if I was doing this setting.

I always thought the were like praying mantis in their physiology (just a bit different of course).

Its should still be on the internet somewhere. I think it’s a rare case of something being better than you remember, rather than just nostalgia.

I’ll have a look if I get a chance this weekend.
