Austro Hungarians 28mm
« on: October 23, 2024, 09:29:32 AM »
Hi all,

Please can you let me know all the best sources for Austro Hungarians 28mm early war please. I am after troops with the early war caps, Bosniaks with Fez's if possible but I may just convert wargames atlantic Germans and get some Fez's. Also this is a long shot is there any hungarian troops with caps and the yellow hungarian knot on their trousers?

Also I cant find any Austro Hungarian cavalry. Any help is much appreciated. I have seen Brigade and Gaddis but they are in the US and it costs quite a bit to ship. However I will look at any source

I have had a look at their site but they dont have many pics. Do they do them with mainly caps and not the berndorfer helmet?

An issue i have had for quite a long time. Most of the Scarab miniatures are in the helmet not the cap. You may just find it easier converting figures. Realiscally I put off doing the project due to the lack of miniatures out there. If you are going for it converstions are probably the way forward.
There are these by Old Glory: https://www.oldgloryuk.com/no-mans-land-28mm-wwi/12/41

Not a clue what they look like.
I have nothing important to say so just keep on scrolling.

Brilliant thank you for that info. I will deffo check out Old Glory, I think converting is absolutley the way forward. I think the Wargames Atlantic German plastics will be good to use for conversions and I have seen Fez's on woodbine. So I can create Bosnians. Have you come across any Austrian heads with caps?

Unfortunately Renegade Miniatures are no longer with us but an even better range is to be found at Brigade Games:

Cheers thank you they are nice, I wish they had a vendor in the UK. They cost a fortune to ship over. Certianly worth thinking about.

A note of caution for Old Glory WWI is that the figures are quite tiny compared to figures from other companies.

Gaddis Gaming has A-H figures. https://www.gaddisgaming.com/en-ca/products/28mm-wwi-miniatures-austrian  They've got cavalry and artillery in addition to infantry.

Battle Honours have a range which might be useful, nice figures, I have a few, slightly small especially the horses, the infantry might be a good fit, the cavalry probably would need different horses.

Also consider Woodbine miniatures, their Turks can come without heads and the kit they wear is similar to German/Austrian webbing etc you could add Fez to those which they sell?

I haven't found any heads sold for austrians, you may be able to find a 3D printable stl file for them somewhere.

My attempt was probably going to look at other ww1/blakan war figures to substitue in for austrians.

https://scarabminiatures.com/product/infantry-marching/

Three of these figures have the cap rather than the helmet.

https://www.tigerminiatures.co.uk/

Blakan war range may have a few suitable figures.

Same again looking at Eurekas Serbains and Bulgarians.

As Rogerc said, some conversions from Woodbine figures may work.

https://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=20&cat=153&page=1

I was debating converting some of the cavalry figures for austrians, particularly the french cuirassiers, though there may be people more knowlegable on LAF that would say I'm wrong.

Really that's all I can think of. For me I gave up, a lot of those figures I want for their own nations anyway, so why buy the figures and butcher them? Also the cost for all the conversions seemed to costly for me. Using plastic figures, like you suggested is probably the way forward. Hopefully someone will come out with an AH range eventually.

Anyway that's as far as I got. There are some good source books for uniform information out there if you go looking. If you continue with this project do post the stuff on LAF, I'd love to see what you do, as it is a project I want to go back to at some point.

As near as I can tell, Gaddis Gaming has taken over the old Battle Honours WWI ranges.

Brigade Games do the best range of Austro-Hungarians IMHO

https://www.brigadegames.com/WW1--Austria_c_183.html

Don’t know of anyone who does the cavalry I am afraid.

I am hoping Wargames Atlantic might do them as they have brought out WW1 Russians.

Thank you everyone for these. I may get some Brigade games stuff in teh future its just the air mail cost is quite a bit. I like the ideal of kitbashing the WW1 German Wargames Atlantic. I have seen that the Afrika corps heads can be used for the Austrian caps. Just trim the cap peaks if possible. Than using Woodbine Fez's for the Bosnians.

The only thing is how to get Olives on the hats.... I have had ideas. I have a moulding tool that melts in boiling water and I can create moulds for the olive branches. I just need to find a small Olive branch! I wonder if there is a Roman mini somewhere where I can get a copy. Or if there is an STL file for that.
