SVEN, a Meatball Western Trilogy FfoL Game
« on: 23 October 2024, 01:58:08 PM »
Monday we had the second of three games in our little FfoL campaign at the Bedford Gladiators Club.

Winter 1878, Gutenburg, Minnesota State.

It's freezing outside, snow covers almost all you can see and the temperature frequently plummets to -10 degrees. People are huddled around fires for warmth and old stories are bound about. One such story is the story of a man only known as Sven...

According to the legend, he was a man who arrived just after the end of the Civil War. Driven by furious vengeance he sat about killing those who had wronged him and he had died in the final gunbattle. He had in his possession a GATLING GUN which he dragged around in a coffin! And said gun was allegedly buried along with him. However, the Minnesota winters are harsh, so any kind of identifying markers had been eroded over the years, but there were three men in town who, again, allegedly knew which grave he was buried in. They are: Mr Cendre, Devil Eyes and Alonso “The Mouse” and reside in town.

With various designs upon the GATLING GUN, the four factions gather in town to execute their plans...

Several Special Rules were in place: anywhere but the main drag would incur a -1" penalty per move action due to snow. The Three persons of interest would either shoot the first within pistol range and jump to their horse OR jump to horse and move. Also, the Army would arrive randomly anywhere between turn 4-9, ending the game.

The factions Secret Objectives: Constabulary, secure that no one manages to dig up the Gatling. The Vindaloo Tribe eliminate ALL of the 3 so no information can be divuiged, the Bandidos were after the info and the Gatling and the Bounty Hunters had a choice of either "get their man" OR get info and go for the Gatling.

The game started out much differently than last, lots of moving on horseback, dismounting and using cover, cagey playing from all. The bounty hunters were first up with excitement, they tried to "get their man", who shot at them, missed, jumped to the horse and got knifed by a waiting brave from the Vindaloo Tribe! Then all Hell broke loose  :o!

Mainly two different fights happening at two different areas. The Vindaloo Tribe were absolutely merciless!! One by one the Bounty Hunters (the player had the worst dice luck I've seen in a long time) fell in battle, Pastor Sjogren got some vindication and managed to take out one of the braves, finally, but it was a Pyrrhic hollow gesture.

On the other side of town, despite the odds definitely in their favour (8-5), the Bandidos stalled at the barn making very little advances into town. They had a man in the graveyard awaiting the vital information about which grave was the correct one, but that info never came. The constabulary put a perimeter around the graveyard and held the Bandidos off. Interestingly enough, the Bandidos second-in-command Senor Manana and the Deputy Hamish were locked in taking pot shots at each other in the graveyard with shotguns  :o! Mostly it was tombstones and wooden crosses that took most of the beating. Sheriff Perkele was bleeding profusely (2 Wounds and a Shock or two) but REFUSED to go down (Impervious), that's Finnish Sisu for you! He fired an accurate shot at Senor Cojones, the Bandidos leader... the shot shattered his guitar (counted as a Pet  lol) and struck the swaggering Bandido in the head, taking him out for the rest of the fight (OOA is not a Wound ;) ). The Bandidos dug in and took pot shots at the Constabulary but few bullets found their mark. There was a blast of trumpets, signalling the army's arrival and the combatants started dragging off their wounded and counting their blessings.

A fun, furious game that everyone seemed to enjoy. As always, I probably missed a rule once or twice, but it's more important to keep the game going and applying the same rule to everyone, we can always look it up later for clarification.

Final Scores:

Big Vindaloo Tribe 15 Renown Points! (5 for Secret Objective, 5 Bonus, 3 Eliminations and 2 for successful interaction with one of the Three). 2 OOA's.

Constabulary: 11 Renown Points (5 for Objective, 5 Bonus, 1 Elimination). 1 ran off the table, but houserule is that ONE of your gang can come back unhurt for next game.

Bounty Hunters: 7 Renown Points (5 Bonus, 2 Eliminations). 3 OOA and commiserations for the bad rolls.

Bandidos: 5 Renown Points (5 Bonus). 1 OOA (Leader) but will come back fresh.

Next and last game in the Trilogy will take place late November :).

Very interesting.  A couple clarifications, though, brought to you by The Department of Pedantry...

1.  -10 degrees fahrenheit.  -10 celsius ain't quiet as cold....

2.  The army would have a bugle, not a trumpet.

Please forgive this exercise in pedantry.  It was otherwise an excellent report...and my gaming group really likes FFoL...

Thank you for the input from the Department of Pedantry, and here's the reply from The Scandinavian Gent:

1. I am inclined to agree with you on that -10 celsius isn't that cold, but plenty cold for the British gents I'm gaming with. Growing up in a country which deals with kilograms, kilometres and Celsius, living in one that deals with pounds, miles, gallons and stones (body weight). Every time I hear Fahrenheit, a part of me wants to say: "well, in that case, I am now going to refer ALL temperature in Kelvin and have that established so EVERYONE else will have to fall in line and do their own calculations. As I have to on a daily basis  lol!".

2. The bugler's bugle, due to the 250.87 Kelvin, had completely packed up and the bugler had frostbitten lips, so a civilian with a Flugelhorn had to be employed  lol.

Thank you kindly sir for the comment and I'm very pleased you enjoyed the report. As a teaser, the final episode will feature a Gatling Gun (miniature and all)  :o!

Like the 'pendatic' reposte (reply).  Fun.

Perhaps a nickname for Gutenberg might be Seedy-ville (CD-ville - given some of the terrain in view).  ;)

All those bodies buried in the graveyard seem to be keeping the ground warmer than elsewhere what with no snow sticking to the ground.  :D

And a rather semi-serious complaint - we have to wait until the end of November!  Oh, bummer.  :o

Also, you should have more photos for your game reports - though some time games are just too furious to remember to take shots.

And I now want to find a US Cavalryman figure in 15 mm equipped with a flugelhorn - just 'cause.

Even though I have to wait SO LONG, I am looking forward to the next report.   lol

Thank you kindly Fifteensaway, it's all supposed to be fun and games  lol.

Thanks for the suggestion to rename Gutenburg (which brought a whole new of ideas like Smuttown, Muckburg etc.  :o), but the name stays. It's a play on the name of the Swedish island which I hail from, so in honour of my birthing place I dragged it into this.

Confound it! I thought I got away with it!  ;), the graveyard is belonging to a Supernatural (the tv-series) diorama I made last year, so took away the Winchester boys, the Yellow Eyed Demon, a female "Jason" and Baby  lol
