Project Battletech: 5 minis painted now!
« on: 19 December 2024, 11:04:28 PM »
Finished my first Battletech mini; went with a woodland type theme, and some glass effect with ink on the cockpit glass.

Edit: anyone know how to flip my photo correctly?  o_o

Excellent Wolverine sir! I like the camo scheme - I’m stupidly fixed on black/white dazzle pattern for my mercenary company (damn you MW5) the “doom zebras”, and it’s slowed the process down somewhat  lol

Very cool. Battletech is one of those things I have a ton of respect for, but missed the time window at which one has to get into it. My wargaming pals know loads about it. Earlier this year I tried to get into it because I painted a whole lotta Battlemechs, but I think I forgot a lot again as well. :D

Anyway, very good colour scheme, that!

Black and white dazzle would be brilliant.
I wish I knew more about the game; I picked up a few boxed sets, and just broke them into small 5-6 mech squads. I can’t even recognize the names of the mechs yet.

I do know a few from the 80s, when I played it with standee mechs, though.

Thanks for the compliments! I have a lot more to do, it’s always the first one that is the toughest.

@HT - I was in exactly the same boat having not played it since the standee version and super old school plastics chaps. I found getting Mechwarrior 5 on console during a sale (very fun if repetitive- but who gets bored of being a 40ft robot!) has helped me recognise the new versions of the mechs very quickly (even just from silhouette). The club I try and attend (don’t often succeed) has become very Battletech heavy since the recent Kickstarters and it was weird seeing so many young people heavily into playing a game I hadn’t seen for 20-30yrs  lol

Mechs (inner sphere) are organised in 4 mech ‘Lances’ or 5 mech ‘somethings’ (can’t remember) if Clan mechs. The good thing about the setting is many mechs are flawed, there’s a range of time periods to control tech/mech availability if you want to and most are available to all factions (old school). If you want stuff ID’d pop them up here or PM me, happy to help.

Keep up the good work,

Andrew

Clan organisation was a Star of 5 points, a point could be a Mech, aerospace fighter or an Elemental point of 5 elementals etc, etc. Most usually a star of 5 mechs.

Sorry used to be a massive BattleTech nerd in the stone age  lol

I ordered a copy of Battletech: Universe today, which apparently has all this mumbo-jumbo in one convenient place  lol

Ask me to identify real tanks, aircraft … no problem. This is like learning recognition all over again!

@HT - I’m an encyclopaedia of useless knowledge about WW2 equipment and designations but Battletech has taken me a while to get back into as there’s soooo many mechs - when I said at club that I used to play it (before many of them were born) I had an intense 20mins where the players asked me about almost everything in the universe - I was fine with the original era stuff but was shocked how much there was now. It’s good to see a crunchy, old school (non-simplified) game being so popular.

@Storm Wolf - Star, of course, thank you sir well remembered.

Or 2 aerospace fighters, Storm Wolf, not 1.
Some Clans, especially Wolf, use a 'Strategic Command Star' comprising of 4 points of either an Omnimech or 5 Elementals as well as a single point of 2 aerospace fighters.

I will take your word for that, like I said it was about a bazillion years ago  :D lol
Anyway the older me much prefers the pre-clan era 3025 and earlier these days, so forgive me for being rusty ;)

I've kept some of my Battletech stuff from years ago, as well as getting into the CGL reboot (both of them, I think). I, too, prefer the 3025-3049 pre-Clan Invasion era, although I do have Clan forces as well. It's just a really good system - tons of breadth but also a ton of depth to it, which is rare in most games these days. What I like about it is that you can teach someone to play in an hour but the tips and tactics can take years to work out and develop.

As I'm just finding my way into Gundam stuff (Universal Century, One Year War) I'm finding myself in a similar situation. And it's just lovely learning about all these vehicles and mech suits and how they were developed and so on. I love a daft fantasy/sci-fi universe witha TON of history developed over decades and which I know nothing about. The more niche the better. I sometimes think how amazingly better this time could be used, but I just don't find myself drawn to useful things I'm afraid. :D

With Battletech it's very similar, and I absolutely love all the technical manuals and blueprints and background. At some point I'll try to get into that even more as well.

I would highly recommend Universe. My first copy arrived trashed by Amazon, but my replacement was perfect. It has a really accessible format to dig into the whole … um… universe. Timelines, organization, lots of pics - really a great work all the way round.
