Scenario - The Cabin in the Woods

The Wing Commander Vagabond (aka The Wingco or Vaggers or any combination of those names) felt bad about his row with Tristram - he had a tendency to lose his temper then regret it later. Unfortunately, Tristram fell victim to a zombie attack before a reconciliation could be made.

However, feeling bad about Tristram didn’t stop the Wingco getting into an equally furious row with his surviving companion, Will Grundy.

After he and Will escaped from the zombie hordes that had seen the loss of two of their team and much valuable equipment and weapons, they soon began to argue about what their next move should be.  The Wingco wanted to head for Borchester, believing that they would be more likely to find supplies and maybe reinforcements there, whilst Will felt it was better to stay in the countryside where they would be less likely to encounter zombies in any numbers. In addition to this disagreement, what was making Wing Commander Vagabond even more irascible was the fact the Will was driving and since they’d taken all the other seats out of the Range Rover so it could be slept in, this meant that the Wingco had to wedge himself in amongst sleeping bags, rucksacks, cooking equipment etc otherwise he’d be rolling round like a pea in a barrel.

As they drove through Waterley Cross, Will decided he would carry on to his home village of Ambridge just in case any of his family or friends had survived. On the outskirts of the village, is the parish church, St Stephen’s, Will noticed a roughly made white flag fluttering above the church notice board by the side of the road. He slowed down to investigate. Painted roughly over the whole board in white paint was the word HELP. He stopped and, being reluctant to leave the vehicle after their recent experience, sounded the horn several times and opened the passenger window a few inches. After a moment, a small flap opened in the top of the church door and a female voice shouted "Are any of THEM nearby?". Will looked round carefully before shouting back "Not that I can see." Another few minutes went by then suddenly the church door was flung open and two people came out on the run and raced to the car. Wingco Vaggers opened the car’s back door and they hurled themselves in. The door was slammed shut and the Vagabond yelled "Drive…!" A group of four or five zombies appeared from behind the church and lumbered towards them as Will accelerated away and across the bridge over the River Am.

Driving past the village shop, Will drove straight on to the village green, reflecting as he did that normally this would be virtually a hanging offence. He stopped the car but kept the engine running then turned to face the new arrivals. A man and a woman. He recognised her. Mrs Shula Hebden-Lloyd, owner of The Stables, an equestrian centre on the outskirts of the village. He didn't know the man; a clergyman but not the local vicar. Shula filled them in on the situation in the village in response to Will’s questions such as
"Who is dead?’
"Everyone"
"How did you survive and who is he?"
"He’s The Reverend Tinker and from the office of the bishop and I’d arranged to join him in the church for a meeting. I went straight to the church from the stables where I’d been doing some training. As you can see" she indicates her riding gear and training whip. "We met in the church, had the meeting and during that time, ‘It’ happened. We came out to find zombies everywhere. A couple tried to stop us getting back into the church but my whip and Reverend Tinker’s solid crucifix proved handy at destroying them. Once we got back in the church, they made no attempt to force a way in. We’ve been there for 3 days."

The newcomers. Shula doesn’t actually have a pistol (although she’d like one)

Food and water were handed out to the newcomers and Will got the Rover started on the road through the village. They reached the main road, the A1992 and the Wingco said "Turn right for Borchester". "No, replied Will firmly, we’re going left. "Not far from here, in the woods by Acre, my granddad has a shack. He’s an old school poacher, very self-sufficient. He’ll have lots of useful stuff there, including a few guns: legal shotguns and, er, maybe other less legal weapons. And if he’s survived, he’d make a great addition to the team."

As he spoke, Will turned left and the decision was made. They were off to Granddad Grundy’s shack.

Granddad’s shack. Nothing threatening here, surely?

Will the peace of granddad’s sylvan glade be rudely shattered? We must hope it won’t.

Great story! I like how you brought in replacements.  :)

I also love the look of the shack in the woods. Can't wait to see what happens as they investigate...  :o

I can see why Wing Co Vagabond is unhappy with that fool Will Grundy, lets hope he's not led them into a nest of zombies with his head strong decision to visit some out of the way cabin in the woods rather than the delights of Ambrudge.

Great opening to the next adventure in Borsetshire.

Thanks, Mike. I just wish the Wingco would stop picking arguments with his own side - makes life very difficult.

Thank you - I hope you enjoy the game/story

With Wing Commander Vagabond having one of his "difficult" days, just about anything. And he’s got the shotgun :o

Thanks. If it goes how I’d like it, they’ll calmly explore granddad’s happy place, discover lots of weapons and supplies, not see the hint of a zombie and find granddad Joe on his hammock round the back, surrounded by empty flagons of homemade cider and being ministered to by Peggy Archer dressed as an air hostess.

Of course, it may not go like that. Especially when the Wingco’s in a strop.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your set-up for the next installment in this riveting saga, sir. I especially enjoyed how you fitted the new replacements into the picture with a very clear idea of who they are, we'll done indeed young man  :).

Let's hope with the aid of the equestrian expert and the clergyman, that things will go much better this time around.

Welcome back, glad you both had a good holiday and thanks for your kind words.

And now, on with the show…….

THE GAME

The Board  There are two spawn zone, one in the s/e corner and one in the n/w corner. There are search markers in the old car, the rowing boat, the outhouse and the shack. survivors come on from south

‘“We’re going to be at least a little better prepared this time” said Will as they rolled slowly along the dirt track to his grandfather’s shack. He stopped the car, turned it round, then reversed the rest of the way to the clearing in front of the shack, if a quick getaway was required, at least they’d be facing in the right direction. All round, dense woodland closed them in.

Wingco Vaggers was still livid. Will’s unilateral decision to take them to the shack had enraged him. They both exited the Range Rover and set off in different directions without a second glance at each other.

The Wingco set off across the clearing towards the shack’s door. He was followed at some distance by The Rev Tinker and Shula; this sort of work was very new to them.

Will chose to move through the woods to the west of the clearing, heading north towards the outhouse.

All of them moved slowly, exercising great caution. So far, so good; not a zombie in sight.

As the Wingco reached the door of the shack, The Rev and Shula peeled off to the right heading for the old car. Will continued with his advance towards the outhouse.

Unbeknownst to the characters, The Rev and Shula had been seen by zombies in the far s/e corner of the glade. Several, one of which was noticeably faster than the others, began blundering through the undergrowth towards them.

As is traditional, a break in the narrative occurs while I take the dog out…..

It all looked like it was going well for the team. Nice stroll in the pastoral country side, but alas! Shambling corpses zeding in on them  :o...

I hope to read the next chapter after work today, I'm at the edge of my seat! What a cliffhanger  lol.

Legionnaire.

An angry Wingco, in no mood for subtlety, and with a shout of “Per Ardua, Ad Astra" barged open the shack door, fired his shotgun and failed to hit any of the four zombies that were lurking inside.

Hearing the shot, Shula and The Rev forgot the old car and rushed into the shack. Shula barged a zombie to the floor.

All this noise attracted zombies from the s/e corner, one of which almost reached the shack doorway; it was another one that was faster than the others.

The zombies in the shack attacked and all three survivors were involved but none were hit. The zombie attacking the Wingco looked very much how Will described his grandfather.

Meanwhile, Will had entered the outhouse or, as he thought of it, the bog, although he’d never call it that in front of Shula. The smell was almost overwhelming but Will is a Grundy and such smells are nothing new to him. As he entered, an elderly lady rushed out of the other cubicle screaming at the top of her voice.

Immediately, swarms of zombies zoned in on her and chased her as she ran east.

Adrenaline flooded the Wingco’s system <gains an extra action> and he destroyed the zombie-that-was-granddad in a furious assault then kicked the door shut, ensuring the swarming zombies outside were kept out. He then turned his attention to another zombie but failed to hit it. Shula and the Rev both despatched their opponents.

Will searched the bog but didn’t find anything whilst zombies from all sides were drawn to the screamer running across the clearing.
One of the faster zombies caught her and made short work of disposing of her.

Yet more of the lurching undead were attracted by the hullabaloo in the shack. The shack door kept them at bay.

Pause while I go to Sainsbury’s to get urgent supplies….

Looks like a fast getaway will be required.  Perhaps through a window on the opposite side of the shack?  Wingco will need a bit of luck.

There were a lot of Fast Zeds and they certainly keep you alert as a player. It was sad for Granny - I hope she died realising that her diversion had helped the survivors  ;)

I have to agree with all that….!

On we go:

Shula quickly disposed of the remaining zed in the shack while the Rev kept a watch from a window.

Zombies swarmed round the back and front of the shack.

Wingco Vagabond opened the door to blast the group outside but with only moderate success - he killed just one. While the swarming zombies were attracted by the shooting, the Rev climbed out of the east window and sneaked off towards the boat.

Schula searched the shack and came up with some useful supplies. Will was still lying low in the khazi, unsure of what was happening outside. The Wingco got caught in the doorway by the fast zombie and got knocked down and wounded. He managed to get back up and shoot again before the zombie could renew its attack. He had more luck this time, killing two and knocking one back and down. He was attacked in response but not hit. All the zombies in the area, those behind the shack as well as those in front, swarmed the door in response to the shooting.

Reverend Tinker took advantage of the diversion and reached the boat, moving very cautiously. Concealed under one of the seats was a weatherproof box containing a shotgun and ammunition. Offering a prayer of thanks, he cradled the gun and headed back to the woods, moving south.

The Wingco was in full fighting mode and blasted the swarm outside the shack. This time he killed two and knocked back two more. He was attacked again and took another wound. He reacted by physically attacking his opponent and smashed it to oblivion with the butt of his shotgun which he then reversed and blasted the swarm again, this time merely knocking one zombie back.

Will decided it was time to do something. He darted out of the bog and attacked a zombie which was heading to the shack and knocked it back.

The Rev took advantage and made it to the wrecked car and hastily searched it. He found some food the sight of which made him realise he was famished. He crammed some down and feeling invigorated, searched again, and found some shotgun ammo <in game terms, he found "Supplies" which he used to re-roll his search die and got the ammo>.

Some Zeds heard the sound of the Rev rummaging round the car and headed his way, most of the rest were still fixated by the Wing Commander as he carried on shooting, apart from one which caught sight of Will and went for him.

The Wingco was attacked yet again and suffered another wound. This time, he really felt hurt, his energy levels plummeted <he had suffered more than half the number of wounds he could take and was down to one action per turn>However, he made a supreme effort and managed to shoot again then slam the door shut once more <he rolled a 6 and gained a bonus action>. His shot killed 3 and knocked back another. While this was happening, Shula quietly climbed through the west window and joined Will. They both sneaked off towards cover.

So, will Wing Commander Vagabond survive the cruel wounds he’s suffered? Will Shula and Will forget themselves in the woods? And where the dickens has the Reverend Tinker got to?

This saga ain’t finished yet

Doug

Taking a short break in my own zombie game today, reading this escapade. The Wing-commander Vaggers is certainly taking one for the team. Biting down and fighting back when it matters most! I too was wondering what Will and Shula were up to all by themselves in the woods  lol, the Reverend Tinker is about to let loose some Divine Intervention I hope with that 12-gauge  :D.

Looking forwards to see what happens next.

Legionnaire.
