Well, well, well.  The plot thickens.  I fervently hope our Gang of Four make it to Loxley-Barrett, and what they find there is of some value.  Godspeed to them...

What a bombshell sir!  :o I KNEW there was more than meets the eye with Vagger's, but I had no idea about his REAL work! He obfuscated that well  ;).

A sterling, riveting start of the next episode! I am off to work so hope to have some exciting catching up to do later on this evening.

Lovely pictures and I like that fond you've got, really brings that hilltop to life sir  :)!

Regards,

Legionnaire.
Thanks, Legionnaire. The game is currently in progress but I’m having to take a turn every-so-often when I get time.

Love it -- the more storyline and character development, the better! Which reminds that mine has been sorely lacking in my games...  :D

Mike Demana
Mike, I think this is particularly true for solo games. Without an investment in the characters, a solo can get a bitsuperficial. I find myself much more likely to break off an encounter if things are looking bad rather than continuing to the bitter end.

Excellent stuff sir! Looking forward to their further adventures.
Thanks Sunjester - the game’s afoot…..!

Well, having a man of the cloth with them should help…! The gang of 4careceven now in the thick of their latest encounter.

Well, this is a work of genius and no mistake! Definitely, the thick plottens! I have only just left Vagabond Manor and there was no mention of this secret department, obviously very confidential. Watch out if you pass through Penny Hassett though, I've heard it's swarming with zombies!

During the drive to Loxley-Barret, the mood in the Range Rover grew tense. This was hardly surprising given that the Team had every expectation of another desperate fight against masses of zombies along with the natural minor inconveniences and annoyances inevitable with four people living in close proximity in a car.

Nor was it surprising when a full-blown, angry row broke out amongst two of them; this had happened before on each occasion they?d been anticipating a bloody confrontation with zombies. What was surprising was that this fierce disagreement was between Shula and the Reverend Tinker. They?d been chatting about the church quite amicably until the talk grew less about the generality of church life and more about specific aspects of church dogma. The others caught snippets of conversation, laced with words like "transubstantiation? and "The Marian Controversy" hurled like verbal missiles to and fro between the two disputants. The Wingco and Will, their own previous disagreements forgotten, looked at each other with bemused smiles and raised eyebrows.

When the Range Rover drove into Lower-Loxley, the argument died down as all four team members concentrated their attentions on what was happening in the streets. All seemed quiet but the team had learnt from experience this could all change in an instant. Following the Wingco?s directions, Will drove the car slowly through the wide open gates of a chain link fence and continued down a service road until a group of four nondescript buildings appeared on the left.

"This is it," said the Wingco "but it?s obviously been thoroughly looted. Those makeshift barriers outside the buildings indicate to me that there has been a determined assault on this compound. I guess the MOD guards hurriedly assembled whatever they could to assist in their defence but it looks as though they were ultimately overrun."
The rest of the team took in the boxes, crates and furniture littering the ground and the barriers of sandbags and assorted items that constituted inadequate breastworks defending the doors of some of the buildings.

The Wingco pointed to a small building in the centre of the compound. "That?s the bunker. It would have been very hard for crazed gangs of looters to break in to that so we could be in luck. It needs a sophisticated key which will be hidden in one of the other buildings. I think we should??.oh, hang on. Zombies?! I see some zombies. Bugger, this is not going to be easy." The others peered out of the car windows and there was no doubt, there were two or three zombies stumbling round the compound.

The Compound

The team swiftly formed two groups. Shula and Reverend Tinker, their disagreement still simmering, went in opposite directions. Shula was paired with Will and they headed to the south westerly building?..

??.while the Wingco was with Tinker; they skirted the edge of the south easterly building.

So each group had someone with a shotgun. Fortunately.

Shula was first into action. She skirted the first building on the left (west) and found the back door open. She saw zombies inside, aimed her shotgun and fired. A click?! She wrestled with the action and tried again <she rolled an out-of-ammo result and used a re-roll benefit successfully to try again> and this time the shotgun blast ripped two zombies within the building to pieces . Seconds later, Will burst through the front door to find one zombie still active. He cannoned into the loathsome creature and sent it sprawling. It got back to its feet, attacked Will but failed to land a blow. Whirling his cricket bat round his head like  a cricket-playing Viking berserker, Will smashed the zombie into fragments, before searching the building and finding some useful Supplies <these give him an additional re-roll benefit>.

Zombies were now appearing in quantities, apparently issuing from a grey, metal plate located behind the bunker.

Most  headed towards Shula and Will who exited the building, heading north towards the next objective. As the zombies started to swarm closer, Shula fired. The dreaded click again. This time, she really was out of ammunition - she?d be fighting hand-to hand unless or until she got a chance to reload.

Shula and Will were side-by-side fighting for their lives. Drawing on her energy reserves <bonus action rolled>, Shula bashed the nearest zed to extinction then reloaded. Although zombies were coming at the pair from all sides, they were slowed down by the oozing, sticky mud that covered parts of the compound area.

Meanwhile, on the east side of the compound, the Wingco had kept the zombies in that area busy, his shotgun blasts bowling many of the rotting horrors off their feet and killing some. He was helped by the fact that the majority of the stream of zombies appearing from the manhole or trapdoor behind the bunker were heading towards Shula and Will.

The Reverend Tinker quietly slipped past the zombies attacking the Wingco

and entered the south easterly building. And got a horrible shock - waiting for him in the middle of the room were three grotesque, stinking zombies. <I?d forgotten that each building has 3 zombies in it and was feeling pleased that things were going so easily for the Rev. Then I remembered?!>. They immediately attacked and one sent Tinker flat on his back. Down but not out. He struggled back to his feet and landed a crunching blow with his heave crucifix, sending one of his opponents into eternity. But the remaining two continued to claw at him and he was hit again and floored.

The Team was now well spread out and zombies were swarming. Here?s a photo showing where everyone was located at this point.

Thank you?! I?ve torn myself away from reading your campaign posts and will now apply myself to getting on with this.

CONTINUATION
Outside the building, the Wingco continued to blast any zombie daring to confront him. Will and Shula were desperately battling superior numbers. Shula, her shotgun loaded again, killed and killed again.

Once more, the Rev struggled to his feet and wielded his cross to deadly effect. Now, there was only one zombie left against him but he was carrying two wounds - who would strike the decisive blow?

The Wingco moved closer to the s/e hut so as to support the Reverend. In doing so, he attracted more zombies to himself. The Reverend, however, managed to overcome the final zombie in the hut. What a great performance from the portly cleric - three zombies confronted and defeated, despite being wounded himself. Elated with his success, he searched the hut and discovered a grubby but usable Molotov cocktail.

Schula and The Wingco continued to slaughter zombies wholesale. The pressure eased on Shula and Will as most of the fresh zombies appearing from the manhole now headed towards The Wingco. Will destroyed his immediate opponent and headed off through the mud to the next building following Shula who had also cleared a way through.

The Reverend, imbued with a religious fervour after his triumph over the three zombies, rushed out of the door and threw his newly-found petrol bomb at the manhole, hoping to stem the flow of fresh enemy. His aim didn?t match his enthusiasm however and the missile missed, exploding south of its intended target.

Reaching the door of the n/w building, Will battered it in. Shula was behind ready to blast anything that came out. Sure enough, there were Zeds in there. Standing in the doorway, Will could only be attacked by one but it was a vicious one. He desperately fended off several attacks that looked certain to maim him <the zombie hit him. Will used Supplies to force a re-roll and was hit again. Fortunately he had extra Supplies that he?d found in the previous building so, with all fingers crossed forced a second re-roll which fortunately was a miss but he?d now used all his re-roll chances.>.

Will struck back at the zombie but missed so decided to retreat behind a barrier next to Shula. As he disengaged, the zombie struck at him but missed. Shula then blasted the zombies in the doorway, sending one hurtling back and destroying another. Before the remaining two could close with her or Will, she shot again and blasted both to pieces. Will then darted into the building to search it. He quickly found some medical supplies but nothing else.

The Reverend, meanwhile, continued to take advantage of the noise the Wingco and Shula were making. They attracted all the zombies so he was able to sneak quietly past the action. He reached the north side of the bunker then stopped and hastily applied a dressing to one of his wounds <he has the medic skill>. He glanced back at the Wingco who was fighting like a demon. Swathes of zombies are destroyed by the blasts of his shotgun then, as Reverend Tinker dressed another of his wounds, there?s a sudden silence. He turned again and to his horror, he realised that the Wingco was out of ammunition. The Reverend had a split second to decide what to do - go back and help The Wingco in his unequal melee or take advantage of The Wingco keeping the Zeds busy and press on to the last building and hopefully find the key to the bunker. He pressed on.

The Wingco takes the brunt of the zombie attack while Reverend Tinker presses on in the background

Wing Commander Vagabond desperately reloaded and fired into the mass of undead crowding round him and heard a  tinny click that he realised was his death knell. Blows rained down on him. He warded off the first but finally took a terrible wound when the ghastly, suppurating, claw-like hand of one of his enemies ripped his throat into tatters.

The Wingco was dead?.!

And on that bombshell, we pause whilst people grieve, think about the mutability of the human condition and pay silent tributes to a great fighting man

TO BE CONTINUED

Disaster!  :o The Wing Commander was the glue holding the group together! Who could fill that role? Without his knowledge, will the remainder fall victim to hordes thirsting for their blood (and brains)??

The Bunker is a tough scenario. By the time we had searched all four of the buildings, we took one look at the crowd right by the central and final objective and said, "Nah...we'll keep the key and come back another day...!"  lol

I was disappointed that The Reverend Tinker missed the spawners point with his Molotov cocktail but I think that?s quite a good tactic to think about in other scenarios.

Those zombie B*ST*RDS!!!  :'( :'( They have no idea what a great man they have just slain. To them, he's just another brain  ;).

This is the kind of news that is so shocking that one needs to go for a lie down!

What a disaster! But alas, that's the harsh reality of that unforgiving apocalypse word (and those fickle dice  lol). I hope the rest will make it out safely and this loss can only galvanise them, carrying on in the spirit of Vaggers, because that's what he had wanted them to do  ;).

RIP the Wingco, a legend in his own lunchtime! A sad loss, in the words of Battery Sergeant Major Tudor Bryn 'Shut Up' Williams, "Oh dear, 'ow sad, never mind".

A very cunning plan that, to land a Molotov on the spawn point. Well done all and carry on rewardless.

Brilliant report, me old stick insect.

Sad but there has to be jeopardy to make it interesting. The Wingco face his 28mm life in the cause of good gaming :)

Legionnaire, I hope you?ve recovered from this dreadful news by now - I realise it must have been a shock. Read on to discover the fate of the rest of the Team.

As always, you encapsulate the horror and poignancy of the situation in a few well chosen words.

CONTINUATION
Here we see the compound in situ. Top left, Shula and Will finishing off the zombies in the n/w building. By the corner of the bunker, Reverend Tinker wrestling with the dilemma of whether to press on or whether to turn back to help The Wingco. And by the corner of the s/e building, The Wingco in his final moments.

Reverend Tinker was unaware of this disaster because he had his own problems, a zombie that had been lurking between the two northerly buildings finally saw a juicy, warm-blooded, appetising meal - the Rev. But that gentleman was no pushover - he?d already dealt extinction to several zombies in the past few minutes and one more wasn?t going to divert him from his mission. Almost dismissively he battered the disgusting creature to oblivion. Although good living had put some pounds on him, he was no mean rugby player in his youth and all his experience as a front-row forward was coming into play in the violent and dirty fighting that was now almost a daily occurrence.

More and more zombies were emerging from the manhole, most of which were attracted to Shula as she continued to shoot - with great effect. Another 5 fell to the blast from her shotgun and more were blasted back. One of these was driven into the flames caused by the Rev?s Molotov cocktail which were spreading. It was consumed in the fiery furnace.

Shula battles the swarm while Will is searching the building

Horror of horrors, the valiant Wingco had returned to the fray but now as a zombie and a particularly nasty zombie at that. He and the two that had killed him set off after Will who, after searching the n/w building, was charging in pursuit of the Reverend, intending to search the n/e building.

However, all the noise was coming from Shula so they soon peeled off and joined the rest of the zombies making a beeline for her. They were slowed by the muddy ground, even the ex-Wilco who was faster than the others. Shula slid behind the sandbag barrier and continued to shoot and slay.

The Reverend burst into the final building and was not surprised this time to find three zombies waiting for him. Without pausing he body-slammed one and destroyed it while Will, a little out of breath, joined him. Together, they made short work of the other two gruesome guards and Will quickly searched the hut and found the sought after key, along with some handy supplies <in the scenario details, it states there is no loot here apart from the key but I was fired up by Wing Commander Vaggers death and arbitrarily awarded the team a loot roll - the powers of a solo gamer😊>.

Finding the key gave Will a real boost to his enthusiasm and he raced out of the building straight to the bunker <he rolled an extra action> He quickly gained access, found some ammunition, a Molotov cocktail and a pistol and ran to what he hoped was safety. Pausing for breath, he noticed something metallic on the floor, partially concealed beneath a heap of smashed zombies. Picking it up, he realised it was a shotgun and not just any shotgun. He immediately recognised it as the Wingco?s. This was the first intimation he?d had of the Wingco?s demise. He was shocked but realised now was not the time to stand and ponder. He fled east, looking for cover. Not far behind him came the Reverend Tinker.

They were able to escape to the car without too much difficulty, mainly thanks to Shula attracting most of the zombies to the other side of the compound with her continuous shooting. When she saw that Will had gained access to the bunker and presumably had found whatever was useful in there, she decided it was time for her to make herself scarce. Because she?d got behind one of the makeshift sandbag barriers, only one zombie at a time could get at her through the gap in the sandbags. Thinking quickly, she blasted the nearest three zombies (one of which was the ex-Wingco,) and then jumped over the sandbags and scooted east. The nearest zombies immediately came after her but none was close enough to contact her. She soon out distanced them and she was through the boggy ground while the pursuing pack was still floundering through it.

A short time after Will and The Reverend, she reached the car and they wasted no time in exiting the compound and speeding away.

Summary:
Gains - Pistol; ammo, meds, Supplies, 2 x Molotov cocktails (1 of which was used in-game)
Losses - The Wingco
Zombies Killed - 59

with thanks to Mad Lord Snapcase

I am now fully restored and able to continue my reading after the shock of the wing commander's demise!

That really gave the team something to fight for! What a glorious team effort and yes sir, rules, as far as I'm concerned are mere guidelines  ;).

The reverend showed some surprising hidden skills beneath the humble godly servant facade and I'm very happy Will and Shula did their bit and came through with something close to "profit " after this harrowing experience.

Great stuff as always sir and look forward to see who they pick up on the way. Who can fill the Wingco's Wellingtons  lol.

Thanks for sharing and lovely to see your team taking on little personalities.

Regards,

Legionnaire.
