I'm confused by the name of the dog... if it's Walter Gabriel's dog, why would Nelson (whoever that may be) be naming it Horatio... have I missed something?

Damn - I?m going to have to fire my extensive and highly paid team of proof readers.

Walter?s son is called Nelson and the dog?s his, not Walter?s.

Let me think how we can resolve this. Er, Nelson was away in Dubai when the apocalypse struck so Walter was looking after the dog but, being well into his nineties, found it a bit to much to cope with. So he asked Brian to take a share of the dog-sitting.

Congratulations on sticking with the story long enough to notice that and thanks for the heads-up :D

Another lovely update on this enthralling saga of Borchester life. What a pleasure to hear the name Walter Gabriel again, a real character! Watch out for that Nelson though, remember the Borchester mail-van robbery?

Thank you old sausage.

We remember that blot on the Gabriel escutcheon only too well. However, Nelson is now roaming Dubai as a Fast Zombie so Borsetshire can discount that threat at least.

The Team

Will Grundy- shotgun and cricket bat
Shula Hebden-Lloyd - shotgun and whip
The Reverend Tommy Tinker - heavy crucifix
Brian Aldridge - pistol
Horatio the Rottweiler - teeth (mainly)

Pausing for a moment before descending the ridge into the unknown, The Team wondered, each in their own way, what awaited them in the abandoned site below.

abandoned and useless junk littered the site

Horatio seemed to understand the importance of their mission and he bounded down the edge of the ridge to the camp below. The rest of the team followed more circumspectly.

formed up and facing the foe

Before descending, they had made a hasty plan. Apart from Shula, they would all head along the north edge of the camp towards some shipping containers, check them out then continue to a shed further on. This route offered cover in the event that there were more hostiles in the area apart from the three zombies that were shambling round in a muddy patch in the middle of the camp. Shula would hang back and dispose of those three then follow on after the rest of the team.

That was the plan. We all know what happens to plans once the action starts. Shula moved into position to cull the zombies while the rest of the team headed off quickly towards the containers. So far, so good. She fired a shotgun blast at the shamblers but only managed to drive one back a few yards - the rest were immediately drawn towards her. This at least meant the rest of the team were not targets of the zombies but it was a disappointing result. Things got worse when, from a swirling vortex in the middle of the mud patch, four more zombies materialised - one of which was noticeably more ferocious than the others. Time to re-think the plan.

Shula stood her ground and fired again - success, a zombie splattered. She shot again but missed, maybe the extra zombies now bearing down on her made her rush the shot. Seeing the problem, Brian paused, took a successful shot with his pistol then hurried on towards the shed, noting, as he passed by, that the containers were empty. The Rev Tinker, not having a firearm, carried on as fast as he could towards the shed with Horatio accompanying him.

Will also realised Shula was maybe in trouble and paused to take a shot at the newly arrived zombies. He destroyed two. The rest of the cursed undead continued to advance towards Shula, their speed thankfully reduced due to the cloying mud. The team began to feel hopeful - four Zeds destroyed…! At which point, their optimism was deflated as three more zombies materialised from the vortex.

The team were now acting instinctively. Reverend Tinker, Brian and Horatio pressed on to the shed while Shula and Will attempted to thin the ranks of zombies with shotgun blasts. Between them, they managed to slaughter five, including the nasty one. Meanwhile, with cover from Brian, Tinker reached the shed and threw open the door, to be confronted by three zombies. He was able to kill one and Horatio didn’t  hesitate - he hates zombies and he launched himself at the nearest one.

He’s a big lump of dog and he easily knocked the creature over and ripped it apart. The remaining one attacked Tinker without success.

Elsewhere, Shula was the target of several zombies but they were unable to reach her. Ominously, another four Zeds appear from the vortex. The team would have liked to have sneaked round the camp with the minimum of fuss and fury but it hadn’t worked out that way.

Things are getting tricky. Back soon to continue this unbelievably exciting report

Thank you, now put down that cup of char and get back to work…! :

TO CONTINUE

Shula found that her pursuers were getting too close so she decapitated the nearest one with a snaking curl of her whip and then pushed on towards the shipping containers. Reverend Tinker thrust the remaining zombie confronting him back into the shed. Brian and Horatio piled in after him but none of them could land a blow on the loathsome creature which in turn launched attacks onto Horatio, fortunately without success.

Will had reached the shed and was positioned outside the back, ready to help Shula if required. There were now several groups of zombies roaming the area, all of which headed towards Shula. And yet more appeared from the vortex.

Back in the shed, Horatio knocked the remaining zombie to the ground then, responding to a whistle from Brian, left the shed to race swiftly but silently in pursuit of his partner. Horatio never acknowledged any human as master, Brian was his partner and they both knew it.

Tinker finished off the downed zombie and then made a thorough search of the shed. There was no sign of Jenny but he did find some useful shotgun ammunition. He then followed Horatio but not quite so quietly! Shula fired at her pursuers without success then ducked behind a container.

Brian had sprinted across the open ground between the shed and the caravan and was hidden from any prowling zombie.

Will was quietly making his way round the shed. As ever, zombies were hard on the heels of Shula. The vortex continued to spew forth fresh zombies.

Once again, the zombie pack was getting too close to Shula for comfort so once again, she turned and thrashed the not-life from her nearest enemy then sprinted as fast as her long skirt permitted round the back of the shed.

The pursuing pack shambled after her but were unable to catch up although one of those recently spawned appeared capable of moving as fast as a normal person. It was closing in. All the other survivors were now gathered at the caravan, out of sight of any zombie.

Wasting no time, Brian opened the caravan door and stepped back in horror as three zombies tumbled out. He took a swing at one but missed. Horatio loyally piled in and ripped one apart and Will followed with equal success.

Just one was left and Reverend Tinker charged at it, swinging his crucifix - probably his enthusiasm was greater than his skill on this occasion because he failed to land a hit. The creature counter-attacked him but also failed to hit. On the far side of the camp, Shula had won free of pursuers and sprinted as fast as she could towards the caravan. Those zombies nearest her followed at a distance while others were attracted by the sounds of fighting at the caravan. And even more rose from the vortex.

The Reverend had another crack at his opponent, this time knocking it down and exterminating it. This gave Will the chance to dive into the caravan and make a quick and thorough search, a speciality of his. This confirmed that Jenny was not there and also there was nothing of value to the survivors. Disappointed but determined, he quickly left the caravan and skirted the protective wall outside, keeping out of sight of any zombies

The rest of the team joined him except the Reverend who remained by the caravan to hold off some approaching zombies.

He was contacted by a huge zombie but was able to knock it down then finish it off. This enabled him to get away from the onrush. Shula attempted to help but her shotgun failed to fire - out of ammunition…! Having no other choice, she also backed away.

Nearly there now. Zombies everywhere and no sign of Jenny. I think we’re in for a climactic denouement with the possibility of a deus ex machina if it seems necessary.

I think after a few games, tactics tend to optimise. It maybe time to tweak the rules.

THE FINALE

Brian, Will and Horatio quietly slid along the wall ready to dart over towards the pickup without alerting any zombies in advance. The team were now out of sight of all the zombies present but a few were close enough to Reverend Tinker to hear the sound of his fight outside the caravan door.

The vortex was choked by the most recent arrivals so no more were able to materialise - a minor respite for the survivors
<this was a modification I introduced on the hoof.

Will looked at Brian"You ready?" he said "Right, with me to the pick-up. It’s the last chance of finding Jenny. Go…!" They both left the cover of the wall and sprinted to the pickup. Will arrived first, opened the driver’s door and was attacked by a zombie that climbed out of the other side and came at him over the vehicle’s roof. It missed him. In response, Will unceremoniously smashed it with his bat.  Brian arrived a moment later, threw himself behind the pick-up and took a quick and successful shot at another zombie that was just on the other side of the bonnet. A few seconds later, Reverend Tinker and Horatio joined them behind the pick-up.

Will quickly searched the pick-up cabin and found some handy supplies. Turning his attention to the load area, he twitched aside an old tarpaulin. Hidden under it was- Jennifer Aldridge…!
"Will Grundy" she gasped "How…..? Help me out please."
When she was out of the vehicle, it was obvious she was hurt. "Sorry Will, I slipped down the side of the ridge and just managed to hide from them. I hurt my leg so I’ll need some help."

‘Don’t worry Mrs Aldridge," said Will, ever the gentleman "Brian and I will get you out of here."
Right on cue, Brian popped up from behind the pick-up’s front wheel. Both recognised this was not the time for emotional reunions. "Go with Will, he gasped, "We’ll hold the buggers off as long as possible."

By now nearly all the zombies in the area were focused on the survivors by the pick-up and were shambling in that direction. Brian took a shot and knocked one back. Shula reloaded then she and Brian with Horatio headed to the old perimeter fence line, ready to cover Will and Jenny as they retreated. The zombies continued to converge on Will although one singled out Brian as a target.

By common consent, now was the time to skedaddle.

Will tore himself from the clutches of a slobbering zombie, fortunately without taking a hit. Horatio just scooted away and reached the car first. He was closely followed by Brian and Reverend Tinker.

Shula hung back until she was sure that Will and Jenny were clear…….

…… then the three of them scrambled up the rocks at the base of the ridge and reached safety. It had been a breathless hour or so but they had rescued Jenny without loss so all felt elated

Time for another restrained slug  of The Wingco’s whisky then they would need to make some serious plans. The group was expanding which made them stronger but in need of more supplies, more suitable transport and ideally a fixed base………..

 Summary:
Gains - 1 x ammo; 1 x supplies; two new survivors
Losses - none
Zombies Killed - 20

And that concludes scenario 4. It looks as though it went without a hitch but actually felt quite tense while I was playing it. It was an enjoyable scenario to play.
