Burrows & Badgers: Necromancer Warband
« on: April 05, 2025, 09:30:15 PM »

I’ve wanted to try Burrows & Badgers out for awhile, and with the Second Edition incoming local interest has picked up enough to make it happen. I placed a fairly large order with Oathsworn a few weeks ago…more than I needed after double checking the rules… now I’ve got plenty. Maybe more than enough to weather me through the coming increased expenses. With the models in hand, they looked like a collection that would be fairly easy to paint. That hunch was correct, I did these in an evening, so will have the whole warband done in a few days.

To start with, I’ve got a Black Rat Necromancer Leader (though painted white), her Stable Ghast minion (in the back), and four summonable Mists Ghasts. In the game, a necromancer casts an Invocation spell to see how many points of Mists Ghasts they can summon that game. I’ve painted four of various sizes, but as mentioned, I’ve got several others I can paint up if I find I need em. The Bat Assassin is the warband “Second” at the moment. In headcanon, he’s the one who “unalives” marked warriors for the Necromancer to raise.

I’ve got a few Thralls to paint up then this warband will be ready to hit the table prior to the delivery of that Second Edition Book.

Great work on them! You've done really well on the ghostly' look!

The Undead band's rules are a bit different in the new book, but what you have there still works perfectly for it.  :)

Thanks, all! Like I said, these took paint really easy. I'm actually not a huge painting fan, but these were fun. Looking forward to the Thralls.

Thank you! I was using that Journal pdf, but nice to hear this warband is still viable in the new edition. Like I said, I ordered a bit more than needed, so hoped I could be covered if there were any changes. The models on the Oathsworn box are living, those on the grey table are various Ghasts.

Fantastic job sculpting these models, btw!

Oh boy - those are ALL ghasts? You may have more than you need for each game but the variety of figures certainly gives you different options. Good luck to you painting them.

I would love to see some battle reports for your games. I bought the first edition B&B rules, but read the rules and felt underwhelmed. The models are drop-dead gorgeous, of course!

It's been a while since I hobbied, the family took a long planned vacation to Scotland and England. (Shout Out to @Hobgoblin - Who provided plenty of local insight and suggestions as I planned the trip and who I met up for a beautiful walk along the Water of Leith and a cup of coffee. He's a Legend. Thanks again, @Hobgoblin!). Anyway, I'm getting back into the swing of things at home, so on to some painted models...

I only had four models left in my Burrows & Badgers band, so was an easy way to get back into it. In the original post, I presented the Necromancer and ghasts. The last four are the “not dead yet”, or living, members – A Great Brown Rat and three Black Rats.

Clearly, I’ve got my own spin on their actual fur color, but here’s the band that I would run not as Undead, but as Rogues. A full band of living rats (and bats). In this iteration of the group the spell caster is not a Necromancer but of the Natural Spell variety and the Great Rat is the leader.

At 350pennies for a starting band, that’s only going to be about 6-7 models. I’ve got 13 painted. The Undead flavor of this group has plenty of room to grow during a campaign. The Rogue side not so much. I might need to source a few rats or bats with bows to give the band some much needed range attacks.

I think I’ve got my first game of B&B Second Edition scheduled later this month. Looking forward to this group raising cain in Northymbra.

Good to see you back and in painting action again! That's awesome that you got a British Isles vacation in and were able to squeeze in a LAF meetup -- woo-hoo!

I look forward to reading your battle reports from B&B, too.

Thanks for the kind words on the band. I’m pleased with how they turned out.

Re: The British Isle… Scotland and its Highlands were the number one destination on my bucket list. It was a privilege to get the opportunity to take the family on the trip and I’ll never forget it. Heck, I wanna move to the UK now. Meeting up with a LAFfie (is that what we’re called? Lol) was icing. I’d love to have played some games with Hobgoblin, but all the more reason to go back!

Fantastic choice of colours, much different to the whimsical style the creator and the rest of us use.

Absolutely fantastic job.
