VDV Airsupport
« on: December 13, 2009, 06:56:03 PM »
Well, this is a good a time as any to get airsupport done for the VDV. I've decided to go for 1 jet and 1 chopper.

Currently working on the jet, a Mig-27 Flogger D by Hasegawa,

built, cleaned and filled everything this week and just gave it the first layer of basecoat. Loadout is centerline gun, fuselage hardpoints 2x rocket packs (not using the 2 rear fuselage hardpoints), wingroot hardpoints 2x 500 pound bombs and wing hardpoints 2x fueltank making this a Fighter Bomber in Rapid Fire terms.

There is just one small hitch.....the kit was very cheap cause it had no decals, and to my surprise I had no spare in stock so I purchased a rather nice one off a Yank on Ebay. Fingers crossed it makes it here in time, cause if they do she might get some teeth  :yahoo:

Some very boring shots sofar of a basecoated aircraft.

Of course I will build a new flighstand for this as well.  :grin:

Scheme of the day (until I change my mind again):

<moments later>

Grmbl... :banghead:

Just resparayed the aircraft for attempt nr 2. Lets just say the first was attempt rather......bad.

(and of course I changed my mind on the scheme, I'll be mixing http://pic.wpalette.com///camms/ar/686/pics/1_2.jpg and http://pic.wpalette.com///camms/ar/686/pics/1_8_b1.jpg....it's not like NATO has a monopoly on nose art)

<the next day>

Basecoat on, first thin camo coat on, blacklined the seams, working on the second thin camo coat and later this week I'll do the third, the canopy and the stores. The exhaust will be layer upon layer of old GW Yellow wash, with the occasional orange wash mixed in, that seems to do the trick allright.

 :o You swine! I keep seeing the wonderful 20mm moderns of V and you, and thinking "hmm... I've always wanted to do a fictitious Balkan conflict... they're only 20mm... It'd be fairly cheap..." but I must resist!

On the other hand, maybe just a platoon or two... and the gear is so funky ... and there's loads of plastic tanks and stuff... and...

NO! Arrgh! May your dice roll 1s for tempting me so! >:(

After having spoken with Thorbjørn about just that - the wide availability of 20mm moderns, train scenics, etc, I too have to been contemplating it, the resistance is slowly crumbling, and much preferably 20mm, than 15mm which seems to be all the arge on TMP at the moment.
But on the model, nicely done, I like the shading around the panel lines, now let's see it finished and weathered!

Well, I've already got 15mm Modern Africa (AK47 Republic) and some 20mm Vietnam US, so I need some 20mm Vietnamese anyway...

...and from there to the Balkans via lord-knows-what insanity is but a short step!! ;D o_o

The model has suffered a Matte coat disaster (Army Painter Matte Varnish, spraycan, currently residing on the nearest landfill) which may or may not be curable with 1000 grain sandpaper and some water. Maybe I will try that in a few months or so, who knows.

Misty?
I had that with figures a few years ago, overspraying again with dullcoat fixed it, the white disappeared.

I wished it was just misty, no, it looks like this, cracks running all over, the varnish having slid off the coat of GW Hardcoat.

Looking back, I can see I had it happen before to other vehicles, just not as pronounced. I clean my vehicles with a alcohol swab and a small cloth for TFT screens before varnishing to make 100% sure I'm not picking up any dust particles that will ruine the varnish. But I'm going back to brush on now, as the often quoted Testors is not available here and you can't send it by air.

Wayswatcher - use it to your advantage!

The cracking can be transformed into weathering/rusting....?

 ;)

Could not resist....and it answers the question.....I'd rather dump it in the trashcan.

difficult for jetplanes that kind of weathering
anyway, before dumping it at least consider the use as a downed wreck?
the paintjob would not be a waste then....

My Idea would be conflicting thinners acrylic/enamel in the cans - could this be?

(don't worry, I won't toss them. From a metre away they look fine)

I have no idea why they react like this, but after posting this in various places I got the idea there are more people having a problem withh Matte varnish sticking to GW Hardcoat. I'll just sand the offending layer down someday with 1000 grain and water and they will be allright for gaming till then. Can't have perfection <cough> all the time  lol
