15mm Star Wars project together with my son
« on: 19 September 2025, 10:38:05 AM »
My son is 13 now and is a big, big fan of Star Wars. And of video games and board games. And last year he has played his first miniature wargames. Diabolical as I am, I knew I must feed this hunger…! But I knew I didn’t want another 28mm project with tons of big scenery, so thought 15mm would be excellent.
So we bought a 3D printer together (Bambu A1 mini), started printing tons of Star Wars  and made a crew for 5 Parsecs from home as a good starting point.
Next up was painting. Before I realized it I had printed a complete Tatooine town and I really needed to catch up or else the mound of printed stuff would be immense. Thankfully, 15mm terrain is so easy to paint and especially this desert stuff. So over the course of 6 months I painted a lot to make sure we had cool scenery to game on with enough variety for different games. Here’s the scenery:

(the walls were edited with Tinkercad so I could fit in magnets, so they would align more easily)

The miniatures

So that’s a good start for the scenery! But we need miniatures too. I already did a lot of 15mm some years back, but I wanted a ‘fresh crew’ for our 5 Parsecs game. This is what we came up with:

I went with superfast and simple paintjobs. Being 15mm they don’t have that much detail that I want to bother with. So nice and fast!

Cara Yash

Cara comes from a military outpost. She was raised to bring order to the galaxy. Throughout her life she has become a professional troubleshooter, making her the perfect leader of the crew.

Ares Zanedi

Ares was born in the slums of Corellia and led a hard life as a scoundrel. It was tough times, but fortunately he was rescued by Cara and now he’s her loyal second in command.

Kravik

Kravik comes from an orphan utility program on Corellia. She and Ares were friends from their youth during their lives as gangers. She has joined Cara’s crew for adventure!
(Kravik was printed on the Bambu A1. Printing on 15mm is a challenge, but a great way to add Star Wars stuff!)

Terek Ordo

Terek lived his childhood on Dathomir, where his village was subjugated by the Nightsisters. Now he’s out for revenge against the witches. He works for Cara as a negotiator.

Neotron

Neotron comes from a military family.  Naturally, he joined the army too. Now he is a professional mercenary who is out for the truth.

Jaku Mastruk

Jaku was raised on a peaceful high tech colony. A very boring place for a kid with ambitions, because Jaku wants to become famous and work on the biggest starships in the galaxy as technician.

Repair Drone

Beep-bee-bee-boop-bee-doo-weep

Enemies

The crew needs some opposition, or else it will get dull fast! I already have a lot of ruffians and civilians, but for our first mission the crew is facing off against large scary bugs! The mission is to deliver something to the center. So we thought it was cool that the locals had hired the crew because their village was getting overrun with deadly creatures! Now the crew has to kill the bugs and plant a bomb in their nest to blow up the eggs. The aliens are simple sculpts from Thingiverse, perfect for FDM printing. Same goes for the eggs.

But we also wanted more Star Wars stuff. So what better than some Imperials eh! Perfect for when a planet gets invaded! And general pesky opponents. They were all printed in FDM. Not perfect, but good enough for us for gaming.

And for Star Wars related goons, we thought the Pyke syndicate from Book of Bobba Fett (or the game Outlaws) are perfect as opponents. Also printed in 15mm in FDM. I made sure to print all kinds of options for weapons and a leader.

So there you have it, the completed start of our project! And since we doing more and more, this thread is sure to be filled with more 15mm Star Wars related goodness. Because, of course I have printed a LOT more by now ;)

This looks amazing - I’m envious of your terrain (and captive opponent!). If it’s any help the website https://www.rebelscale.com/scale-lists/ has lists of all available SW models/toys and their relative scale (quite a lot in 1:100 or near enough). The best in my eyes being the micro galaxy squadron AT-STs (dead on 1:100) - I managed to pick some up for a tenner a piece. Maybe too big/powerful for the types of games you’re playing but as scenery they really add to the Star Wars feel (not that you need it your table already looks brilliant!).

Looking forwards to seeing what you do with all this great stuff (and envious of those with a printer - I’d love that terrain). Keep up the good work.

Oh, sure - it looks great and all.  But dang, you are making me feel guilty about all the stuff I have languishing waiting to be worked on!   ;)

More seriously, if you are willing to invest in metal figures then check out Highlander Studios, Space Pals through Sand Minions in the list: https://highlanderstudios.blogspot.com/p/highlander-studios-catalog.html.  And Khurasan Miniatures Curious Chaps: https://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/planet15.html

For more 3D preprinted items: https://wargamerprinting.com/product-category/uncategorized/miniatures/sci-fi/galaxy-far-away/. But be sure offered in 15 mm - or ask if not.

I would mostly steer away from Galaxy Squadron - usually too big.  Hot Wheels Star Wars items, some, are better.  And if you are in range of Paris and Disney - and if they have a Star Wars area - look out for a great Millennium Falcon and some AT-ATs.

Star Wars can not only be done in 15 mm, it can be done quite well - as you, and some others, have shown.

I've barely scratched the surface here: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=138581.30

Great start and look forward to its expansion over time.  Who knows, maybe before your kid graduates college, I might be making progress on my own.  :o

These look awesome; I just cancelled Disney+ (redacted, check Reddit for why) but 15mm is awesome for Star Wars.

Cheers lads! It's a really fun project to do and Tatooine makes for an excellent starting point as the terrain is so easy to paint. I have a lot of Imperial stuff to do too, probably a lot of oil washes over grey primer!
For miniatures, I have seen Space Pals and Khurasan, but ordering from the US to the EU isn't that great nowadays, shipping is always terrible.
And I will do some AARs for sure, love doing those :)

Hey, I’m Canadian - and most Canadians are boycotting the US. It’s just the way things are nowadays.

15mm is a decent into debauchery and fornication of the worst kind.

That being said, your table looks grand.

I many ways your son is very fortunate to have a father who can provide such an awesome set up.

In another way you set the bench mark so high that he'll never be satisfied with the books under the table cloth and yogurt pot building I had when I was his age.

Excellent stuff.
