Back of Beyond in Space, why not?
« on: 20 February 2010, 05:05:33 PM »
This is a sort of Pulp/BoB crossover thing I suppose, but it occurred to me, and I wonder if it has occurred to anybody else here. Given the popularity of VSF and Victorians in Space, and looking at some of the games on offer, it seems to be races between Imperial Powers to conquer new worlds etc, and fight what are after all, aliens, why has nobody carried it on, (that I have seen at least) historically so to speak. (Albeit an alternative history). So that the huge ranges of 1920-30s figures could carry on their Victorian forefathers adventures across the galaxy.

I don't mean a Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers sort of thing, but Bolsheviks slugging it out with Martians trying to win over the indigenous aliens to Communism and so on. The new Gripping Beast Turkish heads, German helmets with gasmasks was the thing that actually tipped me over the edge to post this, that and a whole load of WH40K Orks with nobody to fight since I sold off all my Imperial Guard, because it set off a train of thought as I was idly painting some Bolshevik officers.

What does anybody think, or is this just the ramblings of a lunatic?

Answers on the back of a straitjacket please................... o_o o_o
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

What a good idea and you could call it 'Space, above the Back of Beyond'  :D

At my old gaming club a chap there was into Space 1889 in a big way and got a load of 1:700 waterline WW2 ships and converted them to use in space. Cracking good fun  :D

cheers

I would like to play in it. It's a wonderful original idea. Do you live in New York City?

I thin k BoB in Space is a bit odd as this means you'll take factions without real technology like mongols or basmachi to space and on the other hand you leave out France, the US of A and many others. And it would be a shame to leave out those Pulp Miniatures Zepellin troopers.  I'd say just go for a generel 20ies background (which is more pulp than BoB) and replace those earthly backwater factions with martians.

While I agree with Poliorketes on the above, I think that a properly "BoBified" variant of the "Red Star" universe (i.e. replacing the Skyfurnaces with, say, radium-powered Zeppelins) might be the way to go - i.e. actually having a retro-futuristic class struggle cataclysm in the 1920s merged with the BoB aspects we like so much.

You could use them (cossacks, mongols etc) as shock troops for boarding actions where close quarters is a given.

I think the term 'BoB' should be taken lightly and the game could include any faction you feel you would want to include, but the focus should be on 'out of the way' actions on Mars  :)

On the other hand, I just recalled the amusing "Fascisti su marte" serial. There might be quite some potential in that.

And let's face it, none of us would say "no" to a Greta "Ninotchka" Garbo figure in a nice space suit and bubble helmet.

Well I was just musing really, and wanted to kick the idea around a bit. As Ignatieff says, why not, its only lead soldiers. I just thought it might be a fun way of using some of the excellent pulp figs in a slightly different scenario, and a way of recycling some of my redundant SciFi collection back into action. I have a load of orks as stated, and some 30 or so of the Kroot mercenaries that would make cool opponents, forgiving them their GW heritage. So all ideas welcome, and who knows this could turn into something.

'Karl Marx' means 'Man from Mars' (or possibly 'Martian Peasant'). Mars is the Red Planet. Don't you see? It's practically made for Pulp escapades on Mars. It's your duty/historical imperative I tells ya to work out how to do this/examine the dialectical balance of forces necessary.

Whichever you like.  ;)

David Drake's "Lt. Leary" series is set in a universe that very much reminds me of BOB. It is set a thousand or two years in the future, and hundreds of planets have been colonized when something (forget what) causes high technology to be lost for a few hundred years, allowing all the colony worlds to develop their own unique cultures in isolation, and with only a few colonies having climbed back to being able to manufacture space-going vessels by the time the stories occur. Worth a read, and the first couple of books in the series are free (as e-books) on Baen's site.

Absolutely - my VOID/UW Junkers have crossed over to Pulp gaming. :)
