Malifaux?
« on: April 04, 2010, 11:50:13 AM »
Hi all,

Has anyone played Malifaux?

http://wyrd-games.net/

I'm looking at it at the moment mainly because of the lovely figures...but has anyone played it?

Are the rules any good?

 ???

Never heard of it before your post.

A variable treasure trove of figs, many that would interest a number of periods/genres.

Thanks for the heads up.

The figures are gorgeous!! The game is played with a deck of cards and is a bit complicated. We are still learning at our store. I have an Outcast gang and they seem to be out magiced by the undead and Lillith gangs. But I am still learning.

Brian

Are the rules any good?

 ???

The missus and I took the dive and picked up four factions for the game, two card decks, and two rule books. The miniatures are exquisite, the characters colorful, and the rule books absolutely beautiful. The rules themselves are card-based (instead of dice-based) and innovative; I didn't find them hard at all to learn, and once you get the basics the game is a cinch. (The card system allows for a good amount of strategy while reducing the chance of losing sheerly as a result of bad dice rolls.)

Oh, and since you only need a few models per side, the cost to get started is actually less than buying a full force for most other games.

Here's a link to a decent review at Board Game Geek:

I love the figures, haven't played the game yet although I have the book and figures etc. I like it from the read through.

There's quite a lot of discussion of it in this thread

Some friends and I recently picked up the rules and some boxed crews, and color me impressed.  The figs are gorgeous, well sculpted, and look like they will be a blast to paint.  I've only played one game with the rules so far, but it was quite a nice experience.  As a large-scale wargamer, I'm not used to single models having that level of detail and options in their actions (heck, even the skirmish games I play aren't that detailed).  The hand-management component really appeals to my boardgaming side, as well.  Big thumbs up from me.

Plus, what's not to like about a system that combines steampunk, Victorian, wild west, gothic horror, and samurai genres?

How well do they scale to other miniature manufacturers? 32mm seems a bit big to me. Awesome figures though.

Doesn't matter with mutants  :D

Btw - are they 32 mm from sole to eye, or 32 from sole to top of head?

Som emanufacturesrs measure the latter way.

Lots of the UKCoRD guys play.

There was a battle report in issue 2 of  The Ancible.

There will be a demo game at Salute, for anybody who is going.  The guy who will be running it has been constructing a fantastic table for the demos.
