Best place for Reddy-brown Lichen?
« on: 10 April 2010, 04:06:41 PM »
Hey guys

I'm planning a martian board, which will feature lots of the red weed (see war of the worlds), for this, I want LOTS of Lichen! Red-brown lichen!
However, I am crap with amounts, so does anyone know where I could get some, good value, in the UK?

I am considering buying rubberised Horse-Hair and ripping it into little patches and spraying them shades of red-brown and drybrushing them up a bit... But I'd like some Lichen to break it up a bit and add some more texture.  :)

Also, is there an online source for dried seed pods that anyone knows of? Rabbitz made excellent use of them on his mars board.  :)

WOuld hobbycraft be a silly suggestion?

No, Hobbycraft would be worth a try Rob. They have good scenery stock - or at least the one in creepy Crawley does.

Model Zone (don't know if they've got a branch near you) also do a full range of Woodland Scenics and other stuff.

But I'm guessing if you want a bulk bag (or more) of reddish-brown lichen fairly cheaply, then eBay or an online scenery supplies place would be your best best.

I got a whole load of bulk Woodland Scenics trees from some model railway shop in Scotland last year - it was something generic like www.modelrailwayscenery.co.uk - which turned out to be a one-man backstreet shop in Scotland with a big global web presence! Nevertheless, they were darned cheap compared to high street retail hobby prices, so it's worth shopping around online, and I'd say online model railway scenery stores are likely to give you what you're after...
