Depends on the size of the board and the thickness of the wood. Assuming you're doing 2ft square boards on 6mm MDF, no, it'll be fine. If it's a 2'x4' board with the ravine running accross the board...... then quite possibly if it gets leant on or carried badly.
So many projects..... so little time.......

If your boards are going to be larger sectionals (2ft x 4ft) I would build a simple box frame with 1x2's and a luan plywood base.  The base will allow you to cut into the board and have depressed scenery such as rivers or sunken roads.  My boards tend to get beaten up a bit at the corners.  The large the board the greater the chance for mishaps.  If your making smaller sections, such as 1ft square lining with duct tape works fine.

I use pink foam, which is similar to the blue but it's 2 inches thick

Hope that helps

I'm actually building a wooden frame to my boards (4x4). Just some hinges, an opening so I can fold the frame (it's easier to transport that way...) and an simple aluminium cross which you can get from IKEA for a euro. Total cost, including some coloring and nice brass hinges: 12 euros. Working time: Will be announced, but since I've pre-cutted the wood already, I'll reckon it takes about one hour.
This is the wood I got (I've forgotten the word in english, so if anyone want's to help out they're more than welcome):

Its 69mm high, so it saves you some back-breaking dice chase on the floor ;)
I am to get all the pieces together, I'll probably have the time for that this weekend. Only issue is whether to put the hinges on the outside, or the inside. Outside hinges may hinder the folding, while inside hinges will leave small gaps in the frame.

If you're going to be using them frequently I would go all out and actually build a frame under them, similar to what I've been doing here:

Not sure if it is clear, but it ends up looking like a small tabletop. Yours don't have to be as thick, my board is 2' x 2'. It doesn't require much more effort and you have something that will endure the test of time ;)

I love making terrain boards :D
