Has anyone used this 'interlocking' (dove-tailed on two sides) 5mm thick foam underlay for terrain tiles?

http://service.selit.com/en/impact-sound-insulation/selitac/5-mm.html

I recently bought some from B&Q in the UK for flooring purposes and am inclined to experiment with what's left over.

No, but let us know how you get on  :)

B+Q have stopped stocking the pinky-orange foam Knaupf loft insulation boards, which is highly annoying, as I have more terrain projects in mind and these were perfect  >:(

Anyone else know where you can still get these in the UK?

Wickes allegedly stock them, but they don't have them in the depot nearest to me  :(

I'm sure I've seen those locking tiles used as terrain somewhere when I've been trawling the internet...

EDIT: not the ones I've seen before and for 6mm but found this

While I have not used these it looks like a fantastic idea - please do let us know how they come along.

Yes, I have. They are quite light and very durable. However, I would recommend you spray them black/brown first before flocking (I used caulking to stick the flocking down) as caulking will lift right off of the tiles.

Looks like a nice solution. I like.

But like cpt Blood I'm eagerly awaiting the return of the pink foam.

I've seen this at my gaming club. One of the guys did this and it looks nice. It took a few tiles though (enough to fill a 8' x 6' table) and it is pretty bulky as far as portability goes.

It looks like a great idea.

I'm always worried about durability. Isn't there some risk of breaking the somewhat fragile looking dovetails?
I would consider strengthening them in some manner, like sticking a bamboo skewer with PVA through the dovetail and as far into the main board as possible.

Having used Corey's (Burgundavia's) tiles for a couple of years now, I think you'd really have to work to get one of the interlocking dovetail pieces to rip off. The floor tiles are 3/4 of an inch thick or so.

Let me know how the cutting goes. I have another set I want to cut into rivers myself.

Nice work so far.

Those are my tiles on the 6mm Wargaming site and i'm about to upload part 2 of the article in the next few days. Anyway heres some pictures of mine finished

I've found the tiles very good and quite durable (so far) but yours sound different as mine dont have the foil backing. I did partially cut a couple of the dovetail bits by mistake which made them a lot weaker so I pinned it and used some PVA and it seems pretty good now. I figured that it the dovetails bits don't handle the rigurs of wargaming I can chop them all off and the boards willl still fit together, however I like them and it stops the boards moving around if they get knocked.

BTW I used "No more Nails" a builders glue, to fix the tiles onto the MDF to avoid the warping you mention. I piled all the pieces of spare wood onto the top and some boxes of figures and left each board for a minimum of 24 hours while the glue cured. It took a couple of weeks to glue all 16 boards but I didnt want to take a chance.

Any questions let me know

Cheers
Kieran

 lol With a bang  :D

You probably already know this Steve but if you pva newspaper onto the back of the MDF can helps with the warping.

I'm not so sure that we have...however it was always a line with a problematic supply chain. It may have just been seasonally discontinued - either way I'll aim to find out over the next few days for you.
